Ramesses II, son of Seti I, was the third Egyptian pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty. Also known as the “Great Ancestor,” he is remembered for his aggressive military expeditions to Nubia and Canaan. The second longest-reigning ruler of Egypt, he is credited for building monuments and cities such as the Pi-Ramesses.

Ibn Battuta was a Berber-Moroccan explorer and scholar who traveled extensively, visiting most of the Old World over a period of three decades. He is one of the most traveled explorers in history. After returning home, Ibn Battuta dictated an account of his journeys, which is simply referred to as The Rihla.

Galen was a Greek physician, philosopher, and surgeon in the Roman Empire. Regarded as one of the most proficient medical researchers in ancient history, Galen influenced the growth of several scientific disciplines, such as neurology, pharmacology, pathology, physiology, and anatomy. Thanks to the translation of his works into Arabic, Galen's approach to medicine remains influential in the Islamic world.

Lucius Verus was the Roman emperor from 161 to 169, alongside his adoptive brother Marcus Aurelius. Their succession together marked the first time that the Roman Empire was ruled by multiple emperors. The eldest son of Lucius Aelius Caesar, Verus hailed from the Nerva-Antonine dynasty. He ruled for only a few years before he died of an illness in 169.

Stefan Dušan reigned as the King of all Serbian and Maritime Lands from 1331 to 1346. He then reigned as the Emperor of the Serbian Empire from 16 April 1346 until his death on 20 December 1355. Stefan Dušan was counted among the most powerful monarchs of his generation as he had conquered a major part of southeast Europe.

One of the six patron saints of Europe, Bridget of Sweden is also the most celebrated saint of her native land. Married with eight children, she gave up worldly life after her husband’s death, establishing the Order of the Most Holy Savior (later the Bridgettines). His works, such as De Causa Dei, had an influence on the works of John Wycliffe.

Greek bishop Irenaeus, now revered as a Catholic saint, is remembered for his clashes with the Gnostics and his notable work Adversus haereses. Irenaeus apparently preached about the validity of the Jewish Bible, while the Gnostics were against it. Legend has it that he had seen Polycarp of Smyrna.

Cleopatra Selene of Syria served as the Queen consort of Egypt between 115 and 102 BC, during which she was first married to Ptolemy IX and then to Ptolemy X. She later served as the Queen consort of Syria from 102 to 92 BC, thanks to her marriages with Antiochus VIII, Antiochus IX, and Antiochus X.

Ashikaga Takauji is remembered as the founder of the Ashikaga shogunate. Apart from showcasing his military exploits, Takauji had also excelled in waka, a form of Japanese poetry with 31 syllables, and renga, or linked verse. He also promoted the Zen philosophy and built several temples.

Baldwin III of Jerusalem was the King of Jerusalem from 1143 until his death in 1163, at the age of 33. The seizure of the Egyptian fortress of Ascalon was one of the highlights of his reign. He is credited with improving the relations between Byzantium and Jerusalem; during his reign, the Byzantine Empire became a close ally of Jerusalem.

Jewish traveller Benjamin of Tudela who visited Europe, Africa and Asia in the 12th century was a prominent figure in medieval geography and Jewish history. His book The Travels of Benjamin sheds light on situation of Jews and diversity of Jewish communities in Europe and Asia during the 12th century and also on the geography and ethnography of the Middle Ages.

Gregory of Rimini was one of the most recognized and greatest theologians and scholastic philosophers of the Middle Ages. He is credited with uniting the Parisian and Oxonian traditions in 14th-century philosophy. Such was the impact of his work, that the effects lasted late into the Medieval Period and Reformation. Many of his philosophical works influenced people like Pierre d'Ailly.

The eldest son of Béla the Blind, Géza II was a child when his father died and began ruling as the king of Hungary and Croatia under the guidance of his mother and his uncle, Beloš. He later allied with Louis VII of France and also encouraged foreign trade.

One of the Four Masters of the Yuan Dynasty, Chinese painter Wang Meng was born into a family of painters and was the grandson of painter Zhao Mengfu. He was mistakenly associated with a conspiracy against the Ming dynasty emperor Taizu and spent the final years of his life in prison.

Andrea Orcagna was an Italian sculptor, painter, and architect. He is credited with overseeing the design and construction of Orvieto Cathedral's facade. He also worked at the Florence Cathedral as a consultant. Andrea Orcagna is also credited with teaching future painters like Tommaso del Mazza, Jacopo di Cione, and Nello di Vanni.

Owain Cyfeiliog, a warrior prince from the Welsh kingdom of Powys, was also a talented poet. Only one poem penned by him, Hirlas Owain, remains preserved to this day, but it is considered one of the finest in Welsh literature. He spent most of his life supporting the king of England.
