Eugen Sandow, a German bodybuilder and showman, adopted the Bulgarian last name Sandow as a pseudonym. Beginning his career in the circus, he later trained under strongman Ludwig Durlacher. Sandow gained recognition by competing in strongman matches against notable athletes. He organized the world's first major bodybuilding competition in London, where he judged alongside Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Charles Lawes-Wittewronge. Sandow is credited as the "father of modern bodybuilding" for his significant contributions to the sport.
