Career
Aaron Kaufman met entrepreneur Richard Rawlings while he was working at a local garage. Rawlings was there to ask if they could get their mechanic to work on his '53 Ford Mainline. That was Kaufman, whose work ended up impressing the other man.
Rawlings set up the Gas Monkey Garage in 2002, and Kaufman joined the shop not long after. He was their lead mechanic, in charge of rebuilding vintage cars that were often in terrible condition. The shop’s business model centres around purchasing old cars, restoring them, and then selling them for a profit. Although Rawlings and his crew generally restore cars that they acquire from various parts of US, they serve an international clientele.
In the ensuing decade, the shop became an extremely profitable entrepreneurial venture, and Kaufman’s contribution to that was quite significant. Their success helped them secure a deal with the Discovery Channel for a show on the garage. ‘Fast N' Loud’ began airing on June 6, 2012, and has since become one of the most popular car shows in the world. Fifteen seasons of the show have been aired to date, and it has been seen by people in over 200 countries. Both Rawlings and Kaufman have garnered tremendous popularity, the former for his charm and business acumen, the latter for his artistic vision and in-depth automotive knowledge.
In 2017, Kaufman spoke to Rawlings about his desire to quit the Gas Monkey Garage. He stated that the unreasonable deadlines put so much pressure on him that he had been feeling over-burdened and extremely aggravated for a long while. When Rawlings mentioned that they had been working together for 14 years, Kaufman remarked that the last five years had felt like 20, alluding to the show and its effects on him.
After leaving the Gas Monkey Garage and ‘Fast N' Loud’, Kaufman starred in his own short-lived car show, ‘Shifting Gears with Aaron Kaufman’, which aired on the Discovery Channel in 2018. He currently has a new show, ‘Aaron Needs a Job’, in which he travels the country doing a variety of technical jobs. The show premiered on the Discovery Channel on July 15, 2019.
In September 2015, Kaufman participated in the Speed Energy Formula Off-Road (Stadium Super Trucks) series at the Sand Sports Super Show in Costa Mesa, California as a Toyo Tires-sponsored truck driver. During the weekend, he drove two rounds, coming in fifth in both his heat races, and later tenth and eighth in the features. Kaufman encountered multiple issues during the races, including an incident in which he partially drove his truck on a K-rail.
Kaufman and Rawlings competed in a motorcycle build-off challenge against well-known customised bike builders Orange County Choppers, Paul Jr. Designs, and Jesse James. Paul Jr. won the competition with Rawlings and Kaufman finishing 2nd.
