When Hayes was interviewed by news.com.au, he revealed that the picture he posted with a shark was fake, and he was only having a good laugh. In addition to this, he also stated that it was quite obvious from the start that the picture was just a funny photo. He also never believed that the snap would be circulated so much by the public. The Australian media which lauded Hayes for his courageous act of clicking a picture with the shark slammed him for fooling people. One of the media outlets even stated that Hayes might not be good with sharks, but he’s good with Photoshop.
