Amy Hoover Sanders’ early career involved a degree in psychology from Williams College in Massachusetts. She also has a certificate in Spanish. However, her passion lay in teaching and she decided to begin her career by teaching for a year in Guatemala. In Gautemala, she worked as a kindergarten teacher at Colegio Americano de Guatemala until 2004. She left Guatemala in 2004, returning to El Paso to teach first and second grade.

She returned to her hometown, El Paso, and co-founded La Fe Preparatory School, a charter school. She worked as the superintendent from 2007 until 2013 and taught first and second grade. Despite not being an active part of the school today, she is an integral part of the overall functioning and remains its executive director. Amy also served as the President for Stanton Street, a website-building company founded by her husband O’Rourke, from 2013 until 2017. She also worked with Centro de Salu Familiar La Fe, a nonprofit organization, for seven years to give back to the society. She decided to leave Stanton Street to spend more time supporting her husband across his campaigns.

She grew in prominence owing to her relationship with the Democratic congressman Beto O’Rourke. She accompanied him on his campaign trails and encouraged his decision to run for the senate after Trump was elected as the president. In videos, broadcasts, and photographs of O’Rourke’s campaigns, Amy is seen standing by him and answering questions fairly. She is loved by the media and the community for her down-to-earth attitude and honestly. Apart from supporting her husband, Amy makes it a point to be an active part of her community. She holds the position of the director for La Fe Community Development Corporation.

Born into a wealthy and influential family in Texas, Amy Hoovers Sanders was a recognized figure at an early age. She is the daughter of Louann and Willian Sanders of El Paso. Her father is real-estate tycoon, and her grandfather, Ricke Harlan Feuille, was a popular figure in Mexico City.

She started dating her future husband, Beto O'Rourke, in 2003 and mentioned that she went to the Kentucky Club for their first date. They married in September 2005 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. They have three children: Ulysses, Molly and Henry and remain happily married to each other. She is seen actively supporting her husband across his campaigns. The couple currently live in El Paso, not far far where O’Rourke grew up. Their children attend the same schools that Beto did.

Trivia

Amy and O’Rourke were spotted by a TV crew on their first date. The crew insisted the duo kiss on camera for a commercial, but Beto waved them off saying that Amy was his sister.

The couple named their first child, Ulysses, after their favorite book of the same name by James Joyce.
