André Holland is an American actor who played Kevin in the Academy Award-winning movie ‘Moonlight,’ for which he won numerous awards and nominations. Throughout his career, he has also acted in several theatre productions and television shows. His notable works on television include ‘The Knick’ and ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’. Born in Bessemer, Alabama, Holland grew up alongside two sisters. He studied at John Carroll Catholic High School and then went on earn his undergraduate degree from Florida State University. Soon after he graduated from New York University in 2006, he landed roles on television. Three years later, the actor made his Broadway debut with a revival of ‘Come and Gone,’ which was also attended by President Obama. Today, Holland is considered a fine character actor in Hollywood. He is quite popular on social media as well, with thousands of followers across different platforms.

André Holland had his first on-screen performance in 2006 when he appeared in an episode of ‘Law & Order’. At the same time, he began performing onstage as well, with his first play being ‘Blue Door’. In 2008, he got his first movie role in the sports drama ‘Sugar’. He followed it up with appearances in the television film ‘Lost & Found’ and the short film ‘Us: A Love Story’, both of which were released in 2009.
In 2010, the actor had a decent start when he acted in the play ‘The Whipping Man’ and earned a Vivian Robinson/Audelco Award for his performance. A year later, he featured in many episodes of NBC’s romantic sitcom ‘Friends with Benefits’. Then in 2012, Holland joined the cast of ‘1600 Penn’ as Marshall Malloy. His projects in the following year included ‘42’, a biographical sports film about the racial integration of baseball player Jackie Robinson in a major league team. The movie garnered mostly positive reviews and earned over $95 million against its $40 million budget.
The year 2014 proved to be a turning point in Holland’s career. That year, the actor began playing the role of Dr. Algernon Edwards in the drama series ‘The Knick’. His performance earned him a Satellite Award nomination. The same year, he played Andrew Young in ‘Selma’, a historical drama film that earned him a NAACP Image Award nomination.
His career reached further heights when he portrayed the character of Kevin Jones in Barry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama movie ‘Moonlight’ in 2016. The film focuses on three life stages of the protagonist: his childhood, teenage years, and early adult life. Holland earned several awards for his performance, including nominations for a Black Reel Award and a Florida Film Critics Circle Award. Also in 2016, he featured in the drama ‘American Horror Story: Roanoke’. This was followed by his performance in ten episodes of the series ‘Castle Rock’.

André Holland was born on December 28, 1979, in Bessemer, Alabama, USA, to Donald and Mary Holland. He has two sisters, Natalie and Maketha. He attended John Carroll Catholic High School and later enrolled at Florida State University. Holland then went on to earn his Master of Fine Arts from New York University in 2006. He has also attended FSU London study centre.
