Anthony Ramos is an American actor who became popular with his dual roles as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the Broadway musical ‘Hamilton’. Ramos was born in Brooklyn, New York, and he studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, from where he graduated in 2011. He made his theatrical debut the same year in the musical ‘Grease’. Set in the mid-twentieth century, the musical revolved around ten working-class teenagers at Rydell High School. After appearing in a few other plays, he came to fame after playing dual roles in the 2015 musical ‘Hamilton’. The musical earned critical acclaim and Ramos received much praise for his acting skills. He made his film debut with a supporting role in the American film ‘White Girl’, which was directed by Elizabeth Wood. Although the film received positive reviews from critics, it was a commercial failure. One of his most recent works on the big screen was a main role in the drama film ‘Monsters and Men’.

In the early days of his career, Anthony Ramos appeared in several regional and touring musicals. His first important role was in the 2012 production of ‘In the Hearts’. The story, which was set over the course of three days, was about the characters in the largely Hispanic-American neighborhood of Washington Heights in New York City.

In 2014, he appeared in a fifteen-minute musical named ’21 Chump Street’. Written by Lin Manuel Miranda, it was about a high school student who falls in love with an undercover police officer but is arrested when he tries to sell drugs to her in order to impress her.

He reached the peak of his career after his appearance in the 2015 musical ‘Hamilton’. It was based on the 2004 biography ‘Alexander Hamilton’ which was written by historian Ron Chernow. The musical was a commercial success and was also praised by critics. It received numerous awards including eight ‘Drama Desk Awards’ and eleven Tony Awards, including one in the ‘Best Musical’ category. It also won the Grammy Award for ‘Best Musical Theatre Album’.

He made his film debut with a supporting role in the 2016 American film ‘White Girl’. Directed by Elizabeth Wood, it also starred actors Morgan Saylor, Brian Marc, India Menuez, and Adrian Martinez. It premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in January. Though it was met with positive reviews, it was a commercial failure, earning just $200,000 on a $700,000 budget. The same year, he also played a role in the short film ’10 Crosby’.

In 2017, he appeared in the film ‘Patti Cake$’. He then acted in the drama film ‘Monsters and Men’ in the main role. The film, which was first screened in 2018 at the Sundance Film Festival, was directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green. In 2017, he also became a part of the American television sitcom ‘Will & Grace’ where he portrayed ‘Tony.’ That same year, he also joined the cast of the comedy-drama television series ‘She's Gotta Have It’ as ‘Mars Blackmon.’ The show ran for 2 seasons and aired its final episode in 2019.

In 2018, he was also seen in the Bradley Cooper-directed American romantic drama film ‘A Star Is Born.’ The film saw critical acclaim upon release and was a major commercial success, grossing over $436.2 million on a budget of $36 million. That same year, he starred as ‘Frankie’ in the comedy-drama film ‘Summer Days, Summer Nights’ which had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. In 2019, he portrayed ‘Staff Sergeant Anthony Martinez’ in the American monster film ‘Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ directed by Michael Dougherty. The film received mixed reviews from critics and was a box-office disappointment.

He next appeared in films and television shows like ‘Trolls World Tour,’ ‘Hamilton,’ ‘Honest Thief,’ ‘In the Heights,’ ‘In Treatment,’ and ‘Blindspotting.’ In 2022, he voiced ‘Mr. Piranha’ in the animated heist-comedy film ‘The Bad Guys’ directed by Pierre Perifel. The film was a critical and commercial success and grossed over $250.6 million at the box office.

As a musical artist, he has given out 2 albums named ‘The Good & the Bad,’ and ‘Love and Lies.’ He also released an extended play named ‘The Freedom EP’ in 2018.

Personal Life

Anthony Ramos Martinez was born on 1st November 1991, in Bushwick, Brooklyn, New York. He grew up with his two siblings, one brother, and one sister. His family is of Puerto Rican descent. He studied at the Halsey Junior High School, and later at the New Utrecht High School, from where he graduated in 2009. Then he proceeded to study at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and graduated in 2011.

He was in a long-term relationship with fellow actor Jasmine Cephas Jones who he began dating in early 2015. The couple later got engaged in 2018. However, they broke their engagement and parted ways in 2021.
