Barry Charles Scheck is a well-known American lawyer who came into limelight while serving on O.J. Simpson's criminal defense team, helping win an acquittal in the highly publicized murder case. He is a co-founder and director of The Innocence Project as well as a professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law of Yeshiva University. Widely considered as one of the world’s finest criminal defense attorneys, Scheck has also served as the president of National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers in the past and has taught legal ethics, forensic science and trial practice to law students, attorneys and judges. One of the main qualities of Attorney Barry Scheck is that he never shies away from handling high-profile cases and tackles them honestly and wisely. While his association with the Simpson team tarnished his reputation to a certain extent, most of his career has been dedicated to the pursuit of valuable causes, including serving those who need it the most. Coming to the awards won by Scheck, he is a recipient of National Trial Lawyers Lifetime Achievement Award. He has also received New York State Bar Association gold medal. Besides these, Scheck holds several honorary degrees and has been named one of the 100 Best Lawyers in USA several times.

Career
After completing his legal education, Barry Scheck spent five years in the Bronx, where he served as a Legal Aid Society attorney. He received a big break when he was given a clinical law professor position at the New York’s Cardozo School of Law. This position also allowed him enough freedom to pursue what was important to him.
In 1987, Scheck served as the lawyer for the famous Hedda Nussbaum case. The attorney defended her as well as assisted in getting the charges against her dropped. He also ensured Joel Steinberg's arrest in the case ‘Nussbaum vs. Steinberg’. After becoming a part of the O. J. Simpson defense team and defending him in the 1995 trail, Scheck went on to become the lead lawyer in the British au pair Louise Woodward case and defender her in the murder trial.
He was also responsible for clearing John Kogut, Dennis Halstead, and John Restivo who were charged of rape and murder of Theresa Fusco in 1985. Scheck proved them innocent after the DNA reports came negative.
Scheck served as the president of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers from 2004–05. Today, he is a professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is also the director at Center for the Study of Law & Ethics as well as of Clinical Education for the Trial Advocacy Program.

Innocence Project
In 1992, Barry Scheck and his law partner Peter Neufeld co-founded the Innocence Project. The Project is basically a non-profit foundation that is dedicated to the use of DNA evidence as a means to free individuals of criminal charges for which they were wrongfully convicted. Till date, 343 wrongful convictions have been successfully overturned by the Innocence Project.

Later on, he received his Master of City Planning (M.C.P.) as well as Juris Doctor (J.D.) degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.
