Bingham’s parents began dating after she divorced her first husband. Kate was earlier married to 'The Black Crowes' singer Christopher Mark Robinson. They got married on December 31, 2000, and had a son a few years later. Kate’s publicist announced their separation on August 14, 2006. Their divorce was filed on November 18, 2006, and the reason cited was “irreconcilable differences.” The divorce was finalized on October 22, 2007. Kate was granted joint custody of their son.

Kate and Matt began dating in 2010. In January 2011, rumors of Kate’s pregnancy with Matt’s child started surfacing. The news was confirmed on January 13 by Kate's representative. When Kate was in her first trimester, she revealed that the pregnancy was unplanned, but they were still excited to welcome the baby. She also revealed that she had been suffering from terrible morning sickness. In April 2011, when Kate was 7 months pregnant, she was photographed with her baby bump. Around the same time, she announced her engagement to Matt on 'The Today Show.' However, she did not say anything about their marriage plans. Throughout her pregnancy, the actor faced the camera boldly and never attempted to conceal her baby bump. They had decided to deliver the child in Los Angeles so that the newborn could avail of both US and UK citizenship. Bingham Hawn Bellamy was born on July 9, 2011, in Los Angeles. He weighed 7lb 12oz at the time of delivery. He is nicknamed “Bing.” Kate was in labor for around 4.5 hours. Matt shared the news through a "tweet." Bingham's father is British, while his mother is American.

Matt and Kate kept the newborn’s name under wraps for a while. They finally revealed the name via a "tweet” 4 days after his birth.

“Bingham” is Matt’s mother’s maiden name. His middle name, "Hawn," is to honor Kate’s mother, Goldie Hawn. “Bing” is the name of actor Kurt Russell’s father. Kurt is Goldie’s current partner. Kate and Matt requested their friends and family members to plant and donate trees to celebrate the birth of their son instead of giving gifts to the newborn.

Matt had shared a few moments from Bingham’s life on his 'Twitter' account. A month after Bingham’s birth, Matt posted a picture featuring all three of them and captioned the photo "Family life!" They were later spotted at a North London café. Kate soon made her first red-carpet appearance after delivering Bingham. At the event, she wore the same black maternity dress she had worn while she was pregnant.

In December 2014, Matt and Kate called off their engagement. However, they remained friends and are now co-parenting Bingham. Kate and Matt have now moved on and are happy in their current relationships. Matt started dating American model Elle Evans. He announced their engagement in December 2017 and the couple got married on August 10, 2019. Bingham’s mother began a relationship with actor and composer Danny Fujikawa in 2016. They have a daughter named Rani Rose Hudson Fujikawa, born on October 2, 2018. They announced their engagement in September 2021. 

Ryder Russell Robinson was born on January 7, 2004, to Kate and her former husband, Christopher Mark Robinson.

In December 2016, Kate took Bingham to Aspen to celebrate Christmas with Matt. Matt’s girlfriend, Elle Evans, also joined them. In February 2017, Bingham and his older half-brother attended a 'Twenty One Pilots' concert in Anaheim, California, accompanied by Kate and Matt. Kate later revealed that both Bingham and Ryder were huge fans of ‘Twenty One Pilots' and that the concert was a surprise for them.
