Blippi Bio

Stevin John rose to fame with his children's educational You Tube channel Blippi wherein he uploads entertaining videos teaching kids everything – from alphabets to colours and nursery rhymes. In the videos, he plays the character Blippi who has a childlike, energetic and curious persona. Dressed in a blue and orange beanie cap, blue shirt, orange suspenders, a bow tie and glasses, he explains – how different things work – in a way little children can easily understand. A lot of his content is about construction equipment and other outdoor activities like visiting parks, farms, museums and local fire stations.

Since he published his first video in January 2014, his channel has grown immensely and currently has a subscriber base of over 13.2 million. His most popular video – Blippi Learns about Jungle Animals for Kids – has already been viewed over 800 million times. There are also foreign language channels – Spanish, Portuguese, German, and Arabic – based on the main channel. Additionally, there is also a secondary channel Blippi Toys which currently has a subscriber base of 7.75 million. Apart from You Tube, children can watch Blippi on Amazon Prime, Roku and Hulu too.

The idea for Blippi came to him after he observed his two-year-old nephew watching a lot of tractor and excavator videos with upbeat music playing in the background. He realised that content quality was just not good. Therefore, he decided to create high quality educational videos for kids himself. He first created a character (Blippi) whose name was easy for the kids to pronounce and sounded happy as well. The now well recognised costume for the character was created by his mother. Due to high cost of animation, he chose live action videos which initially he recorded and edited all by himself. Later, as his popularity grew, he employed professionals to work with him.

As his brand grew, he launched Blippi merchandise which includes doll, DVDs, CDs and apparel. This also includes Blippi branded K-Swiss shoes. He has also launched a live tour – Blippi the Musical – to bring fun and entertainment for kids on stage. However, on stage, Stevin John does not play Blippi.

Before embarking on his You Tube career, Stevin began by working in the United States Air Force. He was a Loadmaster for the C-17 Globemaster with the 4th Nuclear Airlift Squadron. He, however, realised that military was not the right place for him and after his two-year stint (2006-2008) in the air force, he began a career in the digital space. In 2009, he began working as a video editor and marketing consultant for start-up companies and continued to do so for the next five years. In process, he picked up skills that helped him greatly in his You Tube career.

Prior to creating Blippi, he had an online presence under the name of Steezy Grossman. There he tried gross-out comedy videos. One particular grotesque video – which has been taken down – created controversy when it came to light, though it did not affect his popularity. He later said that he regretted doing it.

Stevin John, better known as Blippi, was born on 27 May 1988 in Ellensburg, Washington, United States. His birth name was Stephen J. Grossman. As a kid, he dreamt of becoming limo driver and a fighter pilot.

He got engaged to his longtime girlfriend Alyssa Ingham in 2021. He has Goldendoodle Lyno and a Boxer/Pitbull mix Lily.
