Ever since she made her acting debut in the play ‘The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie’ at 14, she has played a diverse range of screen and stage roles throughout her career. ‘Carnal Knowledge’ and ‘Desperate Characters’ were some of her earliest movies. The actress cum comedian is known for injecting life into her characters, thanks to her inherent talent and sheer dedication. The finest moments of her acting career came in the 1970s and 1980s when her work was being recognized by the audience in movies like ‘Taxi’ and ‘Hester Street’. She studied Yiddish to play the role of Gitl in ‘Hester Street’, and she is also quite fluent in French. She never married, but had a relationship with actor Woody Harrelson in the mid-1980s.

Carol Kane began her acting career with the play ‘The Prime of Miss Jean in 1966. She made her Broadway debut in 1972 in the production of ‘Ring Around The Bath Tub’. Carol's first outstanding performance was on ‘Hester Street’ where she portrayed a naive, determined newlywed Jewish immigrant in New York, who tries to adapt to her husband's ways. Her character studies Yiddish to act in ‘Hester Street’. Carol auditioned six times for the role before finally being cast in it. Her other notable appearance was on ‘Taxi’ (1980-1983), in which she displayed a great deal of performance and her hard work finally paid off as she won ‘Emmy Awards’ for her brilliant acting. She appeared regularly on television shows, including ‘All is Forgiven’ (1986) and ‘American Dreamer’ (1990-1991). Carol excelled in doing bizarre character roles, notably in ‘The Princess Bride’ (1987), ‘Scrooged’ (1988) and ‘Addams Family Values’ (1993). She remained a busy character actress who appeared in all kinds of movies and television shows like ‘Even Cow Girls Get the Blues’ (1993), ‘Trees Lounge’ (1996), ‘Office Killer’ (1997) and ‘Man on the Moon’ (1999).
Carol became famous for the antagonistic role of Madame Morrible in the musical ‘Wicked’ (2005-2014) and she reprised the role many times. Recently, Carol appeared on the shows ‘Gotham’ (2014-2016) and ‘Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (2015-2019). Carol Kane was born on June 18, 1952, in Cleveland, Ohio, United States. She is the daughter of Michael Kane, an architect who worked for the World Bank and Joy Kane, a jazz singer, teacher, dancer and pianist. Carol’s family is Jewish and her grandparents were Russian immigrants. She was raised in Darien, Connecticut and attended the boarding school ‘Cherry Lawn School’ until 1965. In her early days, she lived in Paris for a year and became fluent in French. Her parents divorced when she was 12. Carol and her older sister Anina stayed with their mother. The family moved to New York City and Carol went to the ‘Professional Children's School’ there. She has never been married, but she was a relationship with actor Woody Harrelson in the mid-1980s. They started their relationship as friends, which turned romantic and then returned to friends again. The exact reason for their split remains a mystery, but they continue to remain friends until now.
