Rise to Stardom
Chloe Bailey started learning the cello and violin while she was being homeschooled in Atlanta. She also learned to play the piano from YouTube tutorials. Chloe’s passion for music served as an inspiration to her younger sister Halle. After seeing the sisters’ musical progress, their father Doug Bailey quit his day job and became their manager so that the girls could perform all over Atlanta. Around this time, they realized that they were meant to become professional musicians. In an interview, Chloe said: “Ever since we were little girls, we’ve always kind of known in our hearts that we would be doing this”.
In 2006, the Grammy-nominated duo created its YouTube channel ‘Chloe x Halle’ and started posting covers of popular songs. Immediately after posting their first video “Love Is You”, the sisters caught the attention of music lovers. Chloe Bailey then posted a popular solo rendition of “Summertime” on February 23, 2009. The sisters gained more attention after live performing the American national anthem. The video posted on November 8, 2010, became the first one to get more than a million views.
There was no stopping ‘Chloe x Halle’ after this. Their cover versions of popular songs like Beyoncé’s “Best Thing I Never Had” and “I Was Here”, Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep”, Rihanna’s “Diamonds” and Lorde’s “Royals” gained millions of views. However, they did not anticipate the success of the cover of Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts” when they posted it on December 22, 2013. The video not only received more than 16 million views but also got the attention of music icon Beyoncé. In 2015, she signed the sisters to her music label ‘Parkwood Entertainment’ and became their mentor. Halle and Chloe had already released a popular EP titled ‘Uncovered’ on September 23, 2013. But after being signed by ‘Parkwood Entertainment’, they debuted their official EP ‘Sugar Symphony’ on April 29, 2016. The album was a hit, and the duo was asked to perform at the ‘YouTube Music Foundry’ in June 2016, where they performed their single “Drop” from “Sugar Symphony”. They also performed at the ‘BET Awards’ in 2016.
The first lady Michelle Obama invited ‘Chloe X Halle’ for the ‘White House Easter Egg Roll’, during which they perform their song “Fall”. The sisters’ careers continued their upward trajectory when they became the opening acts of Beyoncé’s ‘The Formation World Tour’ and Andra Day’s ‘Cheers to the Fall Tour’ in 2016. On March 16, 2017, they released the mixtape ‘The Two of Us’ for digital streaming. Chloe Bailey and her sister released their first studio album ‘The Kids Are Alright’ on March 23, 2018, and it is the duo’s most successful project up until now. The album’s two most popular songs are “Grown” and “Warrior”. While “Grown” had already been released in December 2017 as the theme song for the TV series ‘Grown-ish’, “Warrior” featured in the science fantasy adventure movie ‘A Wrinkle in Time’, which released in 2018. The sisters earned two ‘Grammy’ nominations for the album in ‘Best Urban Contemporary Album’ and ‘Best New Artist’ categories in 2019.
In 2019, Chloe and Halle performed as an opening act for Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s ‘On the Run II Tour’. The sisters performed “America the Beautiful” at Super Bowl LIII on February 3 in the same year. In April 2019, they released the song “Be Yourself”, featured in the movie ‘Little’.
