Dania Ramirez was born on November 8, 1979, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, to Agueda Camacho and Daniel Ramirez. She was raised by her grandmother as her parents immigrated to the United States of America when she was six months old.
Ramirez joined her parents in the US at the age of 10. She decided to become an actress early in her life. She would often imitate characters from ‘Telenovela’ in front of her family members. When she was 15 years old, she was spotted by a modeling scout in a convenience store where she was working. Subsequently, she landed a minor role in a soda commercial which encouraged her to move to New York City to pursue a career in acting.
After moving to New York City, she joined the ‘Actor’s Workshop’ and started learning the nuances of acting under the tutelage of Flo Greenberg. In 1997, she was cast as an extra in ‘HBO’ channel’s television film ‘Subway Stories.’ In 1998, she played rapper Jay Z’s girlfriend in a music video titled ‘Streets Is Watching.’ In the same year, she was also seen in another music video titled ‘Cheapskate’ by hip-hop group ‘Sporty Thievz.’
She joined ‘Montclair State University’ (MSU) in New Jersey where she became a star volleyball player for ‘MSU.’ She graduated from the university in 2001 and then moved to Los Angeles to make a career out of acting.

While filming ‘Subway Stories,’ Dania Ramirez met director Spike Lee who cast her to play Daphne in his 2002 American drama film ‘25th Hour.’ In 2003, she played Caridad in the supernatural drama TV series ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ and then played Lucy in a sitcom series titled ‘Run of the House.’
In 2004, she appeared in five films, including Spike Lee’s independent comedy-drama film ‘She Hate Me’ in which she played Alex Guerrero. In the same year, she also played Inez in one of the episodes of American police drama television series ‘10-8: Officers on Duty.’
She played Elena in the 2005 television film ‘Romy and Michele: In the Beginning.’ She was also seen in LL Cool J’s music video ‘Hush.’ The following year, she played Callisto in the popular superhero film ‘X-Men: The Last Stand.’ From 2006 to 2007, she played Blanca Selgado in five episodes of the crime drama TV series ‘The Sopranos.’
