David Murray "Dav" Pilkey Jr. is an American author, cartoonist, and illustrator of children's literature. He is best recognized for illustrating the ‘Captain Underpants’ book series and the novel series ‘Dog Man.’ Pilkey, who frequently uses the pen name Sue Denim, has written over 60 books till date and has won numerous awards, including the California Young Reader Medal and Milner Award. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he grew up alongside an elder sister. His rendezvous with writing happened in elementary school where he created the character of Captain Underpants. During his school years, Pilkey developed ADHD and dyslexia and was often reprimanded for his behavior. As a student author, he entered his first book called ‘World War Won’ in a national competition and won in his age category. Later, he graduated from Kent State University. In 2005, the author married professional musician Sayuri.
