David Brewster, Jr., also known by his stage name Dave East, is an American rapper. He came to attention in 2014 with his mixtape ‘Black Rose’. East was born in Harlem, New York, and developed an early interest in music. He studied at Springbook High School and later at the University of Richmond. He began his musical career in 2010 with the mixtape ‘Change of Plans’. He continued to release mixtapes, such as ‘Insomnia’ and ‘No Regrets’. However, success did not come easily to him. While struggling with his career, he resorted to selling drugs and even went to prison for a while. He eventually decided to mend his ways and start afresh. He focused single-mindedly on his musical career and released the mixtape ‘Black Rose’ in 2014. It not only became a commercial hit but was also met with positive reviews from the critics. In his career so far, he has released over half a dozen successful mixtapes and several singles. His most recent work is his 2018 mixtape ‘Paranoia 2’. It peaked at the 61st position on the US Billboard 200. He is also quite popular on social media; he has over 1.7 million followers in Instagram alone.

Career
Dave East’s first mixtape ‘Change of Plans’ was released in 2010. Although it wasn’t a huge success, it earned him some attention. He continued his career in music, and released the mixtapes ‘Insomnia’, ‘American Greed’, ‘Don’t Sleep’ and ‘No Regrets’. As his works weren’t gaining much popularity, he struggled financially and took to selling drugs for a while in 2013.
In 2014, his life reached a turning point when his music was heard by Nas, his favorite rapper. Nas contacted him and signed him to his Mass Appeal Records. He next released the mixtape ‘Black Rose’ in 2014 and ‘Hate Me Now’ in 2015. Both of these were moderately successful.
His success and popularity grew as his next mixtape ‘Kairi Chanel’ reached the 38th position on the US Billboard 200. It also featured guest appearances from 2 Chainz, Sevyn Streeter, Fabolous and Beanie Sigel.
His EP ‘Paranoia: A True Story’ was released in 2017. It became his most successful work, peaking at the 9th position on the US Billboard 200. It featured guest appearances from Nas, Wiz Khalifa, French Montana and Chris Brown. The same year, he released a mixtape named ‘Karma’.
His EP ‘Paranoia 2’ was released in 2018. It featured appearances from Tory Lanes, Llyod Banks, TI, Bino Rideaux, Matt Patterson and Marsha Ambrosius. It entered the US Billboard 200, where it stood at the 61st position. It was met with mostly positive reviews.

Personal Life
David Brewster, Jr. was born in Harlem, New York on 3rd June 1988. He is of Louisiana Creole, Bajan and Dominican descent. He attended Springbrook High School, where he played basketball.
He eventually played at the Amateur Athletic Union, along with future NBA players such as Ty Lawson, Greivis Vasquez, and Kevin Durant. He later attended the University of Richmond and eventually transferred to the Towson University.
Coming to his family, he has a daughter named Kairi Chanel who was born in 2016. He began dating Kehlani, an American singer, in December 2017.
Dave East has stated that he converted to Islam while he was in prison. He believes that it has brought a lot of discipline into his life.
