David Evans Shaw was born in 1951 in New Hampshire. There is hardly any information on his parents, family background, and early life.

He attended the University of New Hampshire and obtained a B.A. degree from there in 1973. He also earned an MBA degree from the University of Maine in 1976.

Career in Business

He began working in the administration of former governor of Maine James B. Longley. With time, he realised his inclination towards entrepreneurship. Since then, Shaw has founded, co-founded, and invested in several organisations, including some of Maine’s largest companies.

He was the founding Chairman and CEO of the American multinational corporation IDEXX Laboratories Inc., which was incorporated in 1983. Later in 2008, Shaw along with IDEXX was inducted into the ‘Life Sciences Hall of Fame.’ He was also the founding CEO and Executive Chair of Ikaria Pharma, which develops and markets critical care therapeutics and interventions for critically ill patients.

Meanwhile, he was partner of the venture capital firm ‘Venrock Associates,’ from 2004 to 2009 and contributed as senior advisor to a private equity partnership.

In 2004 he joined New Mountain Capital, LLC and served as a Senior Advisor. He left the private equity company in 2007. Thereafter, he co-formed Fetch Enterprises, Inc. in 2007. He remained Executive Chairman of INO Therapeutics LLC.

He is a co-founder of the technology-enabled healthcare services company Direct Vet Marketing, Inc. that was incorporated in 2009. At present, Shaw serves as Chairman of the Board of the company that does business as ‘Vets First Choice’ and provides online pharmacy services to veterinarians in the US. He also co-founded PPD Dermatology, Inc. and Skinetics Biosciences, Inc. and serves as Consultant in the latter.

Shaw has remained investor and director of several public and private companies, including Ironwood Pharmaceuticals, Physion, Modern Meadow, Cytyc, Itaconix and Sapphire Energy.

In 2012, he was conferred with an honorary doctor of law degree from Colby College. He received the same recognition from Bates College and The University of Southern Maine in 2014. Meanwhile in 2013, he was awarded the ‘Cheek Medal’ at the College of William and Mary.

A short-form filmmaker, Shaw is associated with the global non-fiction subscription video-on-demand streaming service ‘Curiosity Stream,’ as an Advisory Board member. He also serves as managing partner of the Portland based private investment partnership company ‘Black Point Group’ that focusses on creating long term value through active involvement in public and private growth companies in the US.

Shaw is a Director at National Medical Health Card Systems, Inc. Since January 2018, he serves the capital market company Leerink Partners LLC as Member of Advisory Council

Other Endeavours

Apart from several successful business pursuits, Shaw has also delved into public service, teaching, and management consulting, and frequently speaks on public forums. He was associated with the public policy and public administration school of Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government as a visiting lecturer. He was in the advisory board of the school’s academic research center, ‘Center for Public Leadership,’ and served in the selection committee of ‘America's Best Leaders.’ In 1986, he was associated involved with senior executive program at the ‘Harvard Business School.’

He was Chair of the independent, non-profit biomedical research institution, Jackson Laboratory; and a trustee of the teaching hospital, Maine Medical Center, in Portland, Maine. He was a member of the Science advisory board to ‘Discovery Communications,’ ‘Young Presidents' Organization,’ the leadership council for Service Nation, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the Executive Committee of the US-Israel Science and Technology Commission.

He is the founding chair of ‘Sargasso Sea Alliance’ (ocean conservation). In 2013, he was recognised as international sea-keeper of the year along with other Sargasso Sea Alliance board members. Presently, Shaw serves as a director at the ‘US National Park Foundation’ and Treasurer of the ‘American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).’

David Evans Shaw was married to American actress, singer, and producer Glenn Close from February 2006 to August 2015. Presently, Shaw resides in Scarborough, Maine.
