David So Bio

David So was born on March 30, 1987, in Seoul, South Korea. His family moved to the United States of America when he was very young. He spent most of his childhood in Sacramento, California, and attended ‘Florin High School.’ Thereafter, he enrolled at ‘University of California, Riverside’ (UCR), where he studied for a few days before transferring to ‘California State University, Sacramento.’ By now, David had figured out his passion and decided to pursue comedy and music. He started performing at stand-up comedy clubs across California while he was still studying, but after three years David decided to pursue his dream and dropped out of college.

After dropping out of college, David So decided to display his talents to a wider audience. Hence, he created a YouTube channel on October 3, 2010, and started posting his music videos. In January 2011, he came up with another YouTube channel named ‘DavidSoComedy,’ where he started posting comedy videos. Both his newly launched channels received positive response from viewers. Over time, his comedy YouTube channel became more popular than his music channel as the former accumulated more subscribers. He soon became famous as a comedian and his popularity among social media users earned him opportunities to star in short films, documentaries, and TV series.

In 2012, he got an opportunity to play Psy in a short comedy film titled ‘PSY Wants to Kill Me.’ He was then featured in a documentary titled ‘Uploaded: The Asian American Movement,’ which explores the emergence of Asian-Americans since the advent of social media platforms, such as YouTube. In the same year, he was also seen in a couple of television series, such as ‘Company Car’ and ‘MashBox.’

He received his big breakthrough in 2013, when he was signed to host a television series titled ‘The Comment Show.’ He went on to host a total of 10 episodes for the series, which got him exposure and more popularity.

In 2014, he played multiple roles in a mini-television series titled ‘JustKiddingFilms.’ Meanwhile, his stature as a social media celebrity continued to rise, and his YouTube channel accumulated more than a million subscribers. He also became popular on several other social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, etc.

In 2016, he appeared as a guest in a comedy TV show titled ‘TigerBelly.’ The next year turned out to be the most fruitful year of his career as he made his big screen debut in a drama film, ‘Gook.’ Directed by Justin Chon, the film, which had David So playing the lead, narrates the story of two Korean American siblings. ‘Gook’ was creened at the 2017 ‘Sundance Film Festival’ and received favorable reviews from the critics. In the same year, he was also seen in a couple of television series, such as ‘Laugh Out Loud by Kevin Hart’ and ‘Goin' Raw with Timothy Delaghetto.’

Apart from contributing as an actor and musician, David has also proved his worth as a producer as he had co-produced ‘Gook.’ He is also an entrepreneur as he co-owns a number of companies, such as ‘Drips & Swirls’ and ‘Sip Matcha.’

David So is in relationship with a girl named Mariel Song for many years now. In 2015, he took to social media to talk about his girlfriend. He even posted a YouTube video titled ‘How David Met Mariel,’ which has gathered over 1.5 million views. David currently lives in Los Angeles along with his girlfriend, Mariel Song.
