DennisASMR was inspired to make ASMR videos after watching such videos by ASMR Darling, RaffyTaphyASMR and anoASMR, the last of whom is also his favorite ASMR artist. It came out of necessity as there was a time when he was unable to sleep and was drawn to ASMR videos by popular YouTubers. As he was finally able to get a good night's sleep, he decided to help others who struggled with sleep depravity.

He already had a few small YouTube channels, but decided to create the new 'DennisASMR' channel in August 2017. However, his first video on the channel was uploaded on April 16, 2018. He continued to gain fans steadily, partly due to the rising popularity of ASMR content and partly thanks to his boyish charms, more so because of the ambiguity over his sexual orientation. However, it is his 'Jealous Boyfriend Roleplay' video, posted on July 6, 2018, that skyrocketed him to fame. Realizing the popularity of the video, he has since then created other boyfriend personas that can be overprotective, comforting, caring, angry, and more. Thanks to the success of the series, he has now established himself as one of the leading ASMR artists on YouTube.

Previous Attempts at YouTube

DennisASMR was interested in becoming a YouTuber since he was only nine years old, and began appearing on his older brother's YouTube channel, 'Toothpast3', in 2011. After his brother left the channel, he kept it running with a friend named Christopher. His first personal YouTube channel, created in April 2015, was initially named 'Dr. Soprano'. However, he later decided to make it more personal by changing it to his real name, 'Owen Riley', and then to 'ItzOwenRiley'.

He began posting DIY videos, product reviews, and tutorials starting in March 2017. After earning 300 subscribers in October that year, he started uploading cover versions of popular songs by artists like Ed Sheeran, Billy Boyd, Shawn Mendes and Sam Smith. He could be seen playing the ukulele in all the songs he uploaded. He also posted an original song titled 'Doorstep' on December 29, 2017.

He eventually hit 500 subs, with another 650 subs on the other channel, but during this time YouTube made changes to monetization; limiting it to YouTubers with 1k subs. He expressed his opinion on this in a video, hoping that he would hit 1k within three months. He continued to upload covers, speed-paint videos and more on the channel, but at one point, he had almost given up on his dreams of becoming a famous YouTuber. Fortunately, the Jealous Boyfriend video, that immediately became a fan favorite, changed his luck for the good. His new ASMR channel has outgrown his previous channel, which has now been renamed to 'Dennis&Skunky'.

DennisASMR was born as Owen Dennis Riley on January 17, 2002 in the United States. 'Dennis', which he uses as his online alias, is actually his middle name. He had previously uploaded cover videos on YouTube with the name 'Owen Riley. He has a brother named Noah and a twin sister named Ariel. His brother had a YouTube channel as well, and his sister has made appearances in a couple videos on his channel.

DennisASMR is multitalented and likes to paint, sing and act in plays. He told during a Q&A video that he likes collecting stuff and has gone through different phases when he collected baseball or football cards, retro video games and consoles. He loves to play games on Xbox One and would love to spend a day with professional gamer and streamer Ninja, playing 'Fortnite' with him all day long. Answering fan questions, he once told that he was scared about his school performance, and was worried about his graduation even though he did well in most subjects. He is a pop music fan.

He has often been asked if he is gay, which he has addressed in several of his videos, clarifying that he is straight and likes girls, even though he never had a girlfriend.
