Derek Theler was born on October 29, 1986, in Fort Collins, Colorado, to Beth L. and Robert Theler. He has a younger sister, Ashlea. At the age of 3, he was diagnosed with ‘Type 1 diabetes,’ or ‘Juvenile Diabetes.’ His father was fitness conscious and regularly practiced weight lifting, which was an inspiration for Theler.

Theler wished to work in the medical field and thus, in 2008 he earned a degree in ‘Sports Medicine and Nutrition’ from the ‘Colorado State University,’ Fort Collins, Colorado. However, he changed his mind after a visit to Los Angeles and decided to be an actor. He is extremely tall at 6’5’’, which poses difficulties at the auditions.

Career

Soon after he moved to Los Angeles, Theler was signed for his first assignment as a model for the sought-after ‘Coke Zero’ commercial. In 2009, he appeared in minor parts in several TV shows, including – ‘The Hills,’ ‘Cougar Town,’ ‘The Middle,’ and also in a short film, (2) ‘G love.’ He performed comic sketches on ‘The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien.’

During the next two years, Therel appeared in a number of movies such as, ‘Valentine’s day,’ ‘Get Him to the Greek,’ ‘Katherine Heigl Hates Balls,’ ‘Camp Virginovich,’ among others. In 2010, he was writer and executive producer of a short film ‘Intrusion,’ and also essayed the role of ‘Mike Myers’ (3)(‘Mike Evers’) in it.

Besides the ‘Coke Zero’ commercial, Therel also modeled for ‘State Farm,’ ‘Nike,’ ‘Kayak.com,’ ‘Arby’s,’ and ‘Verizon.’

In 2012, Therel was cast in a major role as ‘Danny Wheeler,’ the brother of the title character, in ‘ABC’s’ comedy series, ‘Baby Daddy.’ He appeared in all the seasons, till the end of the series in 2017, and worked alongside Chelsea Kane. This role was a major break of his career, which earned him two nominations for the ‘Teen Choice Awards’ in 2013 and 2016.

In the same year [2012], he worked in the web series, ‘Project S.E.R.A.’ wherein he played the role of ‘Riggins.’ Therel appeared as a ‘Sanitation worker,’ in the satirical film, ‘Chicago Sanitation’ [2015], made for the comedy video website and film/TV production company ‘Funny or Die.’

In June 2015, Therel played the title role of ‘Shark Killer’ aka ‘Chase Walker’ who pursues a black-finned shark that swallowed a precious diamond (4)(Missing info (name of in the film): ’Shark Killer’).’ This was released via digital download. By the end of the same year, he appeared in a Christmas movie, ‘How Sarah Got Her Wings,’ in which he played (5)‘Jordaon.’ Initially it was released as video-on-demand and as digital HD, and in December 2015 it was premiered on (6)‘Ion TelevisionTV.’

In 2016’s family movie ‘Secret Summer,’ Theler played the role of ‘Jake Kenman.’ He appeared as ‘Huntsman’ in Whitney Avalon’s (7)‘Princess Rap Battles’ on the ‘YouTube.’ He starred opposite Krista Kalmus in 2017 short film ‘Brotherly Love,’ where portrayed the role of ‘Chris.’ In the ‘Marvel Cinematic Universe’ yet to be aired series ‘New Warriors’ [2017], he playsed ‘Craig Hollis / Mister Immortal.’ (8)(Theler was casted in ‘New Warriors’ in 2017 but the release date is not yet announced)

Theler was ‘Aric Dacia /‘ X-O Manowar’ in ‘Valiant Entertainment’s’ ‘Ninjak vs. the Valiant Universe’ [2018]. He made guest appearances in shows including, ABC comedy ‘American Housewife,’ YouTube series, ‘Wayne,’ and Starz series, ‘American Gods.’

Theler likes outdoor activities such as hiking, outdoor workouts, and enjoys football, swimming and riding motorbike.

Theler and actor Meredith Giangrande began dating in 2010, but they broke up after 2 years in 2012. Later, in 2013 he was often seen with his ‘Baby Daddy’ co-star Chelsea Kane and the two confirmed that they were dating. However, within a few months, they went their separate ways.

Soon thereafter, Theler was in a relationship with actor Christina Ochoa. He proposed to her, which she accepted. But they broke up in 2016 over several misunderstandings.

Since May 2016, Theler is dating Lisa Marie Summerscales.
