Relationship with Vasyl Lomachenko
Vasyl Lomachenko was born on February 17, 1988, in Ukraine to Anatoly and Tetiana Lomachenko. He has a sister named Anastasiia. Anatoly is a renowned boxing coach and has won the Futch–Condon Award for the 2017 Trainer of the Year from the Boxing Writers Association of America (BWAA) and the 2018 Trainer of the Year Award from the ‘Ring’ magazine. He took the responsibility of training his son when Vasyl was quite young. In later years, Vasyl would state that if his father had not been the one to train him, he would likely be playing ice hockey professionally. In 2017, American boxing promoter Bob Arum revealed that Vasyl was not allowed to train for boxing until he learned Ukrainian traditional dancing.
Prior to becoming a professional, Vasyl achieved incredible success as an amateur. He competed in the featherweight and lightweight divisions, and won 396 of his 397 matches. He was the silver medal winner at the 2007 World Championships, gold medal winner at the 2008 European Championships, consecutive gold medal winner at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, and consecutive gold medal winner at the 2009 and 2011 World Championships.
Vasyl made his professional debut in October 2013 in a featherweight bout against the WBO International Featherweight Champion José Ramírez and won the match by technical knockout. However, he suffered the first defeat of his professional career immediately after that, to Orlando Salido. Vasyl accepted the judges’ decision and admitted that he needed to stick to his game plan. Subsequently, he fought and won against American boxer Gary Russell Jr., claiming the vacant WBO Featherweight title as a result. He has faced 11 more opponents to date and has defeated all of them.
Vasyl is notoriously private in his dealings with the media. While he has become one of the most prominent boxers in the world in recent years, he rarely gives interviews. In the infrequent occasions when he does sit down with a reporter, his personal life does not come up as a topic of conversation.
It is common knowledge that he and Elena are married but the details of the ceremony are shrouded in mystery. They have a son together, whom they named after Vasyl’s father.
