While Eric Wakeham is currently best recognized as a TikTok star, his journey to fame was preceded by a very personal journey of coming to terms with his sexuality. After going through several tiresome years trying to find and assert his sexual identity, he came out as a transgender female to male in the summer of 2016. Faced with hatred and bullying outside and denial within his family, he overcame a very difficult phase in his life thanks to his year head in school, and as the first trans-person in the school, he inspired other students to come out of the closet.

He often resorted to talking to the camera in his alone time, which eventually led to him posting videos on the short video sharing site Musical.ly, which is now known as TikTok. He quickly became popular on the platform, and after reaching 100k followers, he began posting videos on his YouTube channel in August 2018. He shared his coming out story in December that year, and in April 2019, he posted a video inspired by some other influencers in which he sent a message to his older self, talking about his anxiety and positive changes he wanted to see in his life in two years. Following a short hiatus, he returned to the platform a few months ago to document his transition as he went through testosterone therapy. He is currently mostly active on TikTok and occasionally posts on YouTube and Instagram as well.

Eric Wakeham shared his experience of coming out as a transgender in the video titled 'MY COMING OUT EXPERIENCE (EMOTIONAL)', posted on his YouTube channel on December 6 , 2018. He felt different since he was eight, and never fitted either with the girls or the boys. He found the right word to describe his sexuality while researching online when he was 13 years old. By the time he went to high school, he had cut his hair short and wore jeans, and was often criticized by his peers for trying to look like a boy. While hate comments about his appearance didn't bother him, his parents were troubled. He eventually transferred to another school due to bullying, and scared of being treated the same way, he began dressing like a girl, wearing skirts and makeup for about a year and a half – all the while suffering from depression and paranoia.

He eventually came out of his shell just before the summer of 2016, first to his school, which was very LGBTQ friendly and supportive of him. However, when he came out to his parents two weeks later, they were in denial, feeling it was okay to be gay but not trans. While bullying in school was severe, his year head in particular stood beside him even when his parents did not and took him to support clubs. She also helped his family understand his situation, and while it took them a long time to come to terms with his sexuality, especially for his mother, they eventually began helping him with the transition by calling him Eric, using 'he', and taking him to gender clinics for hormone therapies. By the time he had posted the video, he mentioned that his mother had not yet fully accepted him, but he understood that she was afraid of him getting hurt and was okay about waiting for the right time. He ended the video with a message to parents of trans or gay kids that they should be more understanding of what their children are going through.
