Fabio Coentrao is a Portuguese professional footballer who currently plays as a left-back for the Portuguese national team. He has also played for the Portuguese club Rio Ave, Real Madrid, and Benfica. A Portuguese international player since 2009, he has represented the nation in one European Championship and two World Cups. Born in Vila do Conde, Coentrão was raised in the Caxinas fishing neighborhood. He kicked off his youth football career at the young age of 11 by joining the Rio Ave football club in 1999. His hard work and unbeatable dedication landed him a spot in the club’s senior team in 2005. In 2007, Coentrão was named to the Portugal U20 team and played for the 2007 Madeira Cup, becoming the competition's top scorer. He also represented his country in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup. On the personal front, the popular footballer has been married since 2010 and has two children.

Club Career
In 2006–07, Fabio Coentrao helped Rio Ave have a good run in the Taça de Portugal. After being voted the Breakthrough Player of the Year, he got opportunities to join several clubs, including S.L. Benfica, ultimately joining them in July 2007.
As part of the club Benfica, he was loaned to Madeira's C.D. Nacional in early 2008. Then in the summer of 2008, he was transferred to Real Zaragoza.
Coentrao returned to Rio Ave in 2009 while still being owned by Benfica. In December, he scored his first goal against FC BATE Borisov of Belarus in the UEFA Europa League.
He had his breakthrough in early 2010 when he led his club to lift the Portuguese League Cup. At the season’s end, he was named ‘Portuguese League Breakthrough Player of the Year’.
In November 2010, the talented footballer helped his club enjoy a 4–3 win over Olympique Lyonnais in the UEFA Champions League group stage. He later joined Real Madrid, making his debut against Los Angeles Galaxy.
His first two official games with Real Madrid were for the Supercopa de España against FC Barcelona. On 28 August 2011, he appeared as a central midfielder during his La Liga debut. Then in December, Coentrao played as a right back against Barcelona, winning the league in his first year.
During the 2014–15 campaign, he had only five league starts out of nine. In August 2015, he was loaned to AS Monaco FC, eventually making his debut against Gazélec Ajaccio in a 1–0 away win.
In 2016–17, his club Madrid won the league championship in which he had made only three appearances. After terminating his contract with Madrid, Coentrão returned to Rio Ave on 31 August 2018. He was, however, released at the end of the season.
International Career
Fabio Coentrao made his international debut for Portugal in 2007 when he was listed in the under-20 team. After been voted MVP in the 2007 Madeira Cup, he represented his team in the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

In 2009, he made his under-21 debut, scoring a hat-trick in the 6–0 group stage win against Qatar in the Toulon Tournament. He then went on to play in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
On 10 August 2011, the footballer made his first ever international goal, in a 5–0 win over Luxembourg. He then went on to participate in the UEFA Euro 2012 championship.
He suffered an injury in Portugal's first match at the 2014 World Cup and was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the tournament
Coentrao returned to action in a 2018 World Cup match against Hungary in Budapest. He, however, was stretchered off in the first half of the 1–0 win.
He was named in a preliminary squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, but he didn’t manage to make the final cut.
