Fred Dinenage Biography

(TV Presenter)

Birthday: June 8, 1942 (Gemini)

Born In: Birmingham, England

Fred Dinenage is an English TV presenter, author and broadcaster who was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2010, for his services to broadcasting. He is a legend in the media industry and has rich heritage of working for over five decades with the same network. Not only has he survived the worst phases of job cuts and out-lasted multiple co-hosts, he has also maintained a high level of energy, with his quick-witted delivery, enviable sense of humor and charming personality shining through in his work, consistently over all these years. Multitasking comes naturally to this stalwart as he has managed to write books and ghostwrite autobiographies along with his busy television work and looks forward to writing his own biography one day, although he jokes about not finding readers who would be interested in his life. He swears he cannot survive without his family, his rescued cat and dog and last but not the least a good bottle of Rioja.

Career
Fred Dinenage was working as a Midlands journalist, while living in Brighton with five housemates, when he got his first audition with Southern TV in 1964, with the reference of Annie Avril Nightingale, who was working there at that time. However, he missed the audition because he was partying the previous night. Fortunately, Angus Wright, the producer, gave him another chance and offered him a 7-week contract for the job which lasted for over 55 years, as he celebrated the 50th anniversary of being a presenter and reporter for ITV in February 2014!
He started with a children show called ‘Three Go Round’ then went on to work on the panel game show ‘Tell The Truth’, quiz show for BBC called ‘Pass The Buck’ and a game show known as ‘Gambit’.
He was the only presenter who appeared on both ‘How’ as well as the reincarnated version of this educational show ‘How 2’. Fred presented the show from 1966 to 1981 along with the creator of the show Jack Hargreaves and returned to present ‘How 2’ in the 1990s.
Fred Dinenage has also worked as a newsreader for programs like ‘Coast to Coast’ with Mai Davies and Fern Britton and ‘Meridian Tonight’ with Jane Wyatt, Debbie Thrower and Natasha Kaplinsky. He was a sport presenter for regional games on Yorkshire Television for a brief period and presented ‘World of Sport’ program on Saturday afternoons.
According to Fred, two of the most memorable and challenging times he had faced during his career were the interview he had to do with Sara, the mother of victim Sarah Payne, after her kidnapping and murder, and the covering of the Moscow Olympics, wherein the British government was against them going for the event and had made it clear that the journalists would not get any support from the Embassy if they landed in any trouble. As per him, it was a learning experience and a very interesting 2 weeks in his long career.
Fred Dinenage has worked behind the camera as well, having penned weekly columns for Southern Daily Echo, a local newspaper of Southampton, and ghostwriting books like ‘Our Story’ and ‘My Story’ for Reginald and Ronald Kray.
His documentary ‘Murder Casebook’ was shown on the Crime & Investigation Network and the sensational nature of his series ‘Britan’s Most Evil Killers’ has been criticized and investigated.
His years of service to television broadcasting earned him the MBE (Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in the 2010.
