The oldest picture on Gomez’s page was posted on October 3, 2017. In it, he can be seen playing lacrosse. His next upload, posted on July 19, 2018, was a short clip of him in a gym. Soon after, he began putting out editorial photographs. It did not take him long to find some success as a model. In April 2019, a fan posted a photograph on Twitter of James Charles and Gomez together at Coachella. This gave way to speculations that they were dating. A few days later, keen-eyed followers noticed a glimpse of what they believed to be Gomez’s ring on Charles’ Snapchat. Soon enough, social media was even more abuzz about their rumoured relationship. Eventually, Charles alleged that Gomez flirted with him and tricked him.

Responding to a Twitter user who had asked him if he was off the market, Charles stated that he was still single. He added that Gomez had “played him for months on end”, calling him a con artist. While the tweets have been since removed, they ended up starting a huge controversy. In a later tweet, Charles wrote that he was going through a heartbreak and did not blame anyone but himself as he “continues to go for the same type of insecure cute boys.”

Charles’ massive fan base came out in full support of him. They accused Gomez of using Charles to further his own social media aspirations. The resulting backlash against him prompted him to put out his side of the story. He spoke at length about his experience with Charles in a YouTube video posted on April 29, 2019. He claimed that while he did go to Coachella with Charles and his team, he made it clear from the beginning that he was straight. Despite this, he alleged that Charles saw it as an opportunity to manipulate a person who might or might not have been trying to figure things out about their sexuality.

This behaviour apparently continued throughout the trip. Around this time, another controversy involving Charles broke out. Popular YouTuber Tati Westbrook’s dispute with Charles resulted in him losing millions of his YouTube subscribers. Among the allegations that Westbrook made against Charles was that he makes romantic advances towards young, impressionable, straight men, echoing what Gomez said in his video.
