Garret Dillahunt is an American actor who is known for the wide variety of roles he has played in television series like ‘Raising Hope,’ ‘Deadwood,’ ‘Mindy Project,’ and ‘ER.’ He started his career on Broadway and after spending quite a few years appearing in stage plays, he shifted his focus to television and movies. In a career spanning over two decades, he has played such versatile roles that no one has been able to typecast him! However, the actor is a big fan of cowboy roles even though he enjoys playing other roles as well. He also prefers roles that are based on the books that he loves. He absolutely adores novelist Cormac McCarthy, and that is why he has auditioned for every movie that is based on McCarthy’s books. Garret is a workaholic who finds acting therapeutic. He has said in numerous interviews that acting allows him to escape to some other world.

Career
Garret Dillahunt began his acting career in Broadway, appearing in theater plays. In 1995, he was seen in the Broadway revival of ‘The Father’ opposite Frank Langella. In the late 1990s, he began appearing in television shows like ‘The X-Files’ and ‘NYPD Blue.’ Then in 2004, he landed his popular role of Jack McCall in ‘Deadwood.’ The makers of the show were so impressed with his acting that they gave him the role of Francis Wolcott in the next season of the series. He portrayed both the roles so realistically that viewers did not realize that it was the same actor playing both these roles!
Garret Dillahunt landed the recurring role of Matthew Ross in ‘The 4400’ (2005-06). From 2005 onwards, Garret was seen as Steve Curtis in ‘ER.’ He appeared for three seasons on ER and then moved on to essay the role of Dr. Michael Smith in ‘John from Cincinnati’ (2007). From 2008 to 2009, he appeared in ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.’ The most amazing thing about his role in this show was that he portrayed four different characters: George Laszlo, Skynet, John Henry, and Cromartie. He portrayed each character so differently that it was hard to imagine that it was the same person doing all the roles!
In 2010, he got the role of Burt Chance in the series ‘Raising Hope.’ The show ran for four successful seasons on Fox. He was nominated for the ‘Critics Choice Television Award’ under the category of Best Actor in a Comedy Series in 2012. In 2014, Garret Dillahunt’s fans were delighted to see him in ‘Hand of God,’ in which he essayed the role of Keith. The show had two seasons; the first one was aired in 2015 and the second one was aired in 2017. In 2015, he got the recurring role of Dr. Jody Kimball in ‘The Mindy Project.’ Dr. Jody Kimball is introduced in the show when Mindy goes on a maternity leave. Dr. Kimball is a bit of a sexist, old fashioned racist man, and Garret played the character convincingly.
In 2018, he landed the role of John Dorie in the much popular series ‘Fear the Walking Dead.’ He is a huge fan of the show and wanted to be cast as Negan, but he is happy playing John Dorie.
Also a movie actor, Garret Dillahunt has played many small and supporting roles in films. Many of his movies have been box office successes and have been critically acclaimed. In 1999, he landed his first movie ‘Last Call,’ in which he essays the role of Curtis. In 2001, he appeared as Billings in ‘The Believer,’ based on a real-life story of a Jewish man who developed strong anti-Semitic philosophy. His next movie, ‘No Country for Old Men’ (2007) is based on Cormac McCarthy’s book of the same name. Garret, being a huge fan of McCarthy, auditioned five times for the role of Llewelyn Moss but had to settle for the role of Wendell. The movie won five Academy Awards.
‘The Assassination of Jesse James’ (2007) was another critically acclaimed movie that he was part of. In the ensuing years, he went on to do many more movies including, ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009), ‘Winter’s Bone’ (2010), ‘Burning Bright’ (2010), and ‘Killing Them Softly’ (2012). In 2013, the film ‘12 Years a Slave’ was released and his portrayal of Armsby proved once again why he is such a scene stealer.
His film ‘Beast’ came out in 2015, followed by the movie ‘Come and Find Me’ the following year. ‘Braven,’ out in 2018, is his latest movie where he once again mesmerized his fans with his portrayal of the villainous character Kassen.

Garret Dillahunt was born on November 24, 1964 in Castro Valley, California. His father, David Dillahunt, and mother, Jeanne Dillahunt, were working-class people. He had two brothers: Brett, who is a teacher, and Eric, who died in a car accident.
He grew up in Washington, and went on to pursue a journalism degree from the University of Washington. After graduating from college, he enrolled for the Graduate Acting Program at the New York University.
He married Michelle Hurd, an actress best known for her role in ‘Blindspot,’ in 2007.
