Hanne Norgaard started her career as a model when she was a teenager. With a desire to explore the world she came to London on her own and started modelling. Her parents were keen that she get a good education. They insisted that she study make-up artistry which would ensure that she could stay in the beauty and fashion world which she was interested in. She graduated with honours from the “International Artist Make Up Academy” in London. Her career got off to a flying start when she landed a job with BBC within the first week of her graduation in 1992. This was followed by another assignment for film production house Columbia Tristar, London, in 1993. She worked as the key make-up artist for some of the major Columbia Tristar projects.

After her marriage to Idris Elba they moved to New York in 1999. She worked for movies, television shows, fashion shows and magazine shoots. Her career path slowed down after her separation with her husband in 2003, but in 2007 she kick-started it again with her beauty initiative ‘Make Up Your Mind’.Through this service Norgaard and her team of expert make-up artists and hairstylists offer a vast range of make-up services to clients which include accompanying clients on shoots, different ways of hair styling and personal styling. Another unique offering of this service is make-up parties where they help women host parties during their holidays to learn make-up and enhance their holiday looks.

From 2009 she has been associated with the ‘My Black is Beautiful’ event as a make-up artist and advisor. As the name suggests this event celebrates the colour black and aims to change the perception of society about what being beautiful means.

‘Kim Elba Cosmetics’ is Hanne Norgaard’s own cosmetics line which sells paraben free and cruelty free cosmetics.

Norgaard has made special appearances in the reality TV show — ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’.

Hanne Norgaard and her husband, Friar Andrew, run the ‘Heart Strong Ministry’ in Georgia. The Ministry’s mission is to help people make “Heart decisions” which bring them closer to God.

Hanne Norgaard was born on the 5th of April 1977. Her mother is from South Korea and her father is an African-American. She grew up in South Korea, England and USA. She has not revealed the names of her parents or her siblings or details her early life.

Norgaard met Idris Elba when she was working as a make-up artist in London and he was an upcoming actor. They got married in 1999 and moved to New York to pursue better opportunities for their respective careers. In 2002, their daughter Isan Elba was born. In 2003 a year after Isan was born the couple separated. Norgaard has never spoken about the reason of the divorce and she and Idris remain friends. They were seen celebrating their daughter’s 16th birthday party together.

In 2013 after remaining single for ten years, Hanne Norgaard married Pastor Andrew L. Friar II. The marriage celebration ended in a romantic yacht cruise. On their first marriage anniversary Norgaard said that her husband was a special gift from God to her. She added that she was astounded by his love of God, patience, understanding and confidence.

In an interview to ‘People’ Magazine in 2019 Isan Elba spoke about her how she watched her mother battle mental illness. According to Isan Elba her mother had been diagnosed with bipolar depression, depression and chronic anxiety.

Hanne Norgaard is bilingual; she speaks English and Danish fluently.
