Career

Hager’s family has been affiliated with the Republican Party for generations. Not long after completing his education, in 2001, he began his tenure as Staff Assistant to the Senior Advisor at the White House to President George W. Bush. He served in that position until 2003 and was also associated with the Bush-Cheney Presidential Campaign 2004 as its Deputy Operations Manager. From 2005 to 2006, he got the chance to serve directly under Secretary Carlos Gutierrez. He has also worked for Karl Rove, Republican political consultant and policy advisor, for a period.

In the private sector, Hager has worked at Constellation Energy in its corporate strategy and development group. During his tenure with this company, he accumulated valuable experience by being part of a number of mergers, acquisitions, and other corporate advisory transactions.

In 2011, he became an employee of Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), a private equity company. In his initial years at KKR, he was their lead product specialist for the global energy and infrastructure platforms and collaborated with the investment professionals to facilitate the global capital raising and asset management activities. He is presently serving as a director at KKR. He has also been an active board member of Coastal Conservation Association’s Building Conservation Trust since 2012.

Childhood & Early Life

Henry Hager was born on May 10, 1978, in Richmond, Virginia, the United States of America. His father, John Henry Hagar, is an entrepreneur and Republican politician. He was part of the Bush administration as an assistant secretary within the United States Department of Education from 2004 to 2007. He was also the 37th Lieutenant Governor of Virginia from 1998 to 2002 and the chairman of the Republican Party of Virginia from August 2007 to May 2008. Hager’s mother is Margaret Dickinson "Maggie" Hager, née Chase. He has an older brother named John Vigil Hager.

Henry Hager studied at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond, Virginia. After graduating high school, he attended the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia, from where he earned his MBA degree. He also got a B.S degree from Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, in 2000.

Relationship with Jenna Bush

Hager began dating Bush in the early 2000s, but the relationship was relatively casual at first. Jenna’s mother, Laura Bush, stated in an interview in 2005 that he was not a serious boyfriend. She added that she regretted saying it on television as the young man whom her daughter was dating at the time was “nice”. However, by 2007, Jenna was preparing to marry Hager. He proposed to her in August that year after gaining permission to marry Jenna from her father. Following the engagement, Hager’s mother said in an interview that the Bush family have been their “great, great friends all this time”. She admitted that Hager asked for Bush’s permission before he asked Jenna to marry him, stating that everybody follows rules in their family.

They exchanged marriage vows in 2008 at Bush’s ranch in Texas in front of 200 guests. The wedding was officiated by Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, who has advised President Bush on religious and spiritual matters for a long time.

Hager and Bush have two daughters together. Bush revealed the news of her first pregnancy during an episode of ‘Today Show’ that aired on December 12, 2012. Four months later, Bush gave birth to their first daughter, whom they named Margaret Laura “Mila” Hager. Their second daughter, Poppy Louise Hager, was born in August 2015. Poppy was apparently President Bush’s nickname when he was a child. The family presently resides in New York. They also have a beach house in Long Island.
