Australian actor Jai Courtney is best known to international audiences as Varro in the TV series Spartacus: Blood and Sand and as Captain Boomerang in the film Suicide Squad and its spin-off, The Suicide Squad. Born and raised in Cherrybrook, a Sydney suburb, he also spent part of his childhood in New South Wales. He studied drama at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, before appearing in minor roles in several projects. Courtney is also known for his roles in films such as A Good Day to Die Hard; I, Frankenstein; Divergent; and Terminator Genisys. His role of Jim Melic in the film Felony earned him the Best Supporting Actor nominations of the Film Critics Circle of Australia Award and the Australian Film Critics Association Award. He has also voiced the character of Flasheart in the computer-animated film 100% Wolf.

Childhood, Early Life & Education

Jai Courtney was born Jai Stephen Courtney, on March 15, 1986, in Cherrybrook, a suburb of Sydney, Australia. Courtney has both Italian and British Isles origins. His parents had apparently named him after the character Jai from the 1966 movie Tarzan.

His father, Chris Courtney, worked in a government electricity company, while his mother, Karen Courtney, worked as a teacher at the Galston Public School. Courtney grew up with his elder sister and aspired to be a musician in his early days.

While he initially attended the Galston Public School, along with his sister, he later joined the Cherrybrook Technology High School in New South Wales. In his school days, Courtney was a skilled rugby player and participated in drama, too.

He later joined the famous Australian drama school Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), from where he graduated in 2008. At WAAPA, he had Viva Bianca (his future co-star from Spartacus) as his batchmate. Courtney also joined a ballet course in college but failed.

Career

Jai Courtney made his acting debut as Alex in the 2005 short film Boys Grammar. In 2008, he made his TV debut as Harry Avent (a guest lead), in a couple of episodes of the medical drama series All Saints. The same year, Courtney bagged a lead role in the popular Australian series Packed to the Rafters.

He continued to play minor roles in films and TV series, before bagging the role of Charlie in the 2012 action film Jack Reacher. He then starred in movies such as A Good Day to Die Hard (as CIA Agent John "Jack" McClane Jr., 2013); I, Frankenstein (as Gideon, 2014); and The Exception (as Captain Stefan Brandt, 2016).

Jai Courtney shot to fame with his recurring role of Varro in the series Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010). He was also seen as Eric Coulter in the sci-fi action film Divergent (2014) and reprised the role in its sequel, Insurgent (2015).

His portrayal of Jim Melic in the 2014 Australian crime thriller film Felony earned him the Best Actor in a Supporting Role nominations of the Australian Film Critics Association Award and the Film Critics Circle of Australia Award.

He was also appreciated for his performances as Kyle Reese in Terminator Genisys (2015) and DC Comics villain George "Digger" Harkness/Captain Boomerang in the hit 2016 film Suicide Squad and its 2021 spin-off, The Suicide Squad.

He made his voice acting debut as the character of Flasheart in the 2020 computer-animated film 100% Wolf. The movie was adapted from the 2009 Jayne Lyons novel of the same name.

He is also known for his roles as Capt. Stefan Brandt in the 2016 romantic war film The Exception, as Garth MacArthur in the 2017 satirical comedy series Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later, as Wizz in the 2019 comedy-drama film Buffaloed, as Cam Sandford in the 2020 drama series Stateless, and as Agent John Nivens in the 2020 action-thriller film Honest Thief. In 2023, he appeared in the main role of Bob Goodwin in the heist drama anthology series Kaleidoscope.

Courtney played Macbeth in the 2017 Melbourne Theatre Company production of the Shakespearean drama. He made it to the 2012 Rising Talent issue of Inside Film Magazine. The issue featured 25 rising stars of Australia, including Alex Russell and Margot Robbie. Courtney has also been the brand ambassador for the innerwear brand Bonds.

Personal Life

From 2006 to 2013, Jai Courtney was in a relationship with Thai-born Australian actor Gemma Pranita. From February to June 2015, he reportedly dated English actor Emilia Clarke. It is believed they had developed a bond while working on the 2015 film Terminator Genisys.

In 2016, Courtney began dating Adelaide-born PR coordinator Mecki Dent. The couple later owned a pitbull named Velvet.

Courtney is fond of tattoos and has quite a few on his body, including a skull. In 2019, he declared he had quit smoking a few years earlier.

He lost 20 kgs to play Kyle Reese in the 2015 movie Terminator Genisys, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. He not only stopped all bulking workouts but also introduced many changes in his diet during that period. His diet included protein-rich food, and he also drank 8 liters of water every day.

While working on the 2010 film Spartacus, Jai became a good friend of fellow actor Andy Whitfield. Their friendship lasted till Whitfield’s death in 2011. He is still quite close to his wife and children.
