In 2011, while John Bradley was in the final year of his acting course, as part of the coursework he had to do a showcase presentation. It was after this presentation that an agent approached him and he signed up with them. With two plays for the school still left to go Bradley got a call to audition for the ‘Game of Thrones’. He was rehearsing for one of the plays, so taking a day off he went for the auditions. After being approved in the initial round he had to go through another round with the casting director, the writer and the producer of ‘Game of Thrones’. That particular day his train was delayed and Bradley reached the audition venue late, nervous, stressed and perspiring. However, his training in acting took over and in spite of the stress he performed the part well enough to land the role of Samwell Tarly.

From an early age it was comedy that had attracted Bradley. His take on Samwell’s character therefore, has a warm humorous side to it which comes out especially Samwell’s relationship with his close friend Jon Snow. Bradley admits that he hadn’t read the books during the earlier stages of filming but as the filming progressed he became curious about the larger picture. An interesting fact about Samwell Tarly’s character is that it is based on the author of ‘Game of Thrones’, George R.R. Martin, himself and Bradley considers it a huge privilege. It is also perhaps because of this fact that his character does not get killed and Bradley played Samwell Tarly in all the 8 seasons of the series from 2011 to 2019.

‘Game of Thrones’ established Bradley as an acting talent to reckon with. Another meaty role followed in the acclaimed TV series ‘Borgia’. The series was based on an infamous Italian Dynasty and Bradley played the part of Giovanni di Lorenzo de Medici.

Bradley has been part of quite a few hit productions such as ‘Shameless’ and ‘Merlin’ in 2012. The same year he had an uncredited role of an Austrian prince in the film ‘Anna Karenina’.

John Bradley played the lead role in the 2016 short comedy film ‘Roger’. He won the ‘Independent Days’ Best Actor award for his role in this film.

In 2018 he starred in the film ‘Patient Zero’ alongside Stanley Tucci and Natalie Dormer his co-star from ‘Game of Thrones’. He was also the voice of Apprentice Marten Webb in the video game ‘World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth’.

John Bradley was born on 15, September 1988 in Wythenshawe, Manchester, England. He has a sister who is 13 years older than him. He did his schooling from St. Paul’s High School and went to Loreto College in 2005. Graduating from Loreto College in 2007 he went on to get a BA (Hons) in acting from the Manchester School of Theatre in 2010.

John Bradley has not revealed much about his family or his early childhood years except that he comes from a working-class household. One fact that he does talk about is that he used to be a ‘Spice Girls’ fan and would exchange Spice Girl photos with girls in his class. He says Geri Halliwell was his favourite Spice Girl.
