Julia Zelg Bio

Julia Zelg was born on July 7, 1994, in São Paulo, Brazil. To further her education and pursue her dreams of a career in music, she moved to London, UK, in 2013. Half of her family is from Germany, and the other half is from Brazil. She is the only child of her parents. At some point after her birth, her parents divorced. She had since been predominantly raised by her mother, who was featured in the video, ‘Making My Mom Goth’.

Zelg enrolled at Goldsmiths, University of London to study classical music sometime after she immigrated to England. In July 2019, she announced on social media that she had finally obtained a Bachelor’s degree in music and would begin pursuing a Master’s degree in September.

Julia Zelg is an ardent Harry Potter fan. She has read all the books and watched all the movies multiple times. She went through a phase once when she would watch a Harry Potter film every day.

She holds citizenships of both Brazil and Portugal. However, she has never been to Portugal, having spent most of her life in Brazil and currently resides in England. She is a Buddhist.

Julia Zelg created her self-titled YouTube channel on May 7, 2010. She uploaded her first video, ‘Closet Confidential TAG!’, on March 24, 2014. Her next video, ‘Easter tutorial: Easter gift and decorated eggs’, was posted on April 9, 2014. These early videos made it clear to her audience what types of content she was going to publish.

Zelg has been experimenting with her looks since she was quite young. At the age of 13, she started bleaching her hair. After she became active on YouTube and found an initial group of audience for her videos, she started incorporating her own experience with alternative fashion and lifestyle into her content. In her conversational and Q&A videos, she talks about a variety of topics, from fashion to pop culture and often tells personal anecdotes. She is openly lesbian and a proud member of the LGBTQ community on YouTube. A significant portion of her content is devoted to sexual and gender identities. On July 15, 2019, she uploaded a video, titled ‘London Pride (And My Birthday) VLOG - Feat. Revolut Donations’, in which she documented the time she spent at the 2019 London Pride festival and parade with her wife Eileen De Freest.

Julia Zelg also makes hair and makeup tutorials, DIY videos, and personal vlogs. An active participant in the gothic subculture, several of her videos cover that subject as well.

Her popularity on YouTube has found its way to other social media platforms. She has over 50 thousand followers on her @juliazelg Instagram account. On Twitter, she has a few thousand followers. Zelg regularly posts on Facebook as well. She also has a personal website, which she uses to promote her music and YouTube videos and respond to her fans.

On October 7, 2017, Zelg announced in a video, ‘titled My Album! Preview And Music Video Dates’, that her debut independent EP, ‘Love Potion’has been released and is available for digital download. It is comprised of four songs: the title track, ‘Twisted’, ‘Alive Again’, and ‘I’m Done with Love’. On September 8, 2018, she put out the music video for her latest single, ‘Judge Me’.

On September 4, 2018, Julia Zelg announced in a video that she is in a new relationship. About a week later, on 12 September, she introduced Eileen De Freest to her audience. De Freest is a feminist and LGBTQ activist, writer, and BBC Radio political pundit. The announcement was met with mixed reactions from her fans. While some fully supported Zelg and were happy for her, others were less kind, especially because of the age difference. Soon enough, people all over social media were discussing the relationship, and mainstream news outlets like The Sun and The Mirror were publishing articles on it. Zelg and De Freest have maintained that they are just like any other couple, despite the 37-year age difference.

In the past few months, they moved in together and got engaged. On June 28, 2019, Zelg posted their wedding video.
