The versatile actor is most famous for his portrayal of ‘Alexander "Tig" Trager’ in the long-running crime series ‘Sons of Anarchy’. He later appeared in the Canadian television show ‘Bad Blood,’ which earned him further popularity as a small screen star. Coates began his career as a stage actor and has featured in many popular stage shows, including Jez Butterworth's play ‘Jerusalem,’ and has won the Outstanding Performance by a Male in a Principal Role – Play (Large Theatre) Award at the Dora Awards. Kim Coates appeared in a few films as a back-up artist before getting his first credited role in the comedy film ‘Palais Royale’. He made his television debut in 1987 when he appeared in the show ‘Miami Vice’. He then appeared in a couple of shows in special roles before featuring in the television film ‘Dead Silence’ as ‘Theodore 'Ted' Handy’. The film was based on the novel ‘A Maiden's Grave’ by Jeffery Deaver, and Coates was nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor in a Guest Role in a Dramatic Series category at the Gemini Awards for his performance.
In the next few years, Coates appeared in shows like ‘CSI: Crime Scene Investigation’, ‘A Friend of the Family’, ‘CSI: NY’, and ‘Smallville’. Later, in 2006, he picked up the role of ‘Richard Sullins’ in the thriller drama series ‘Prison Break’ for six episodes. He also appeared in shows like ‘Entourage’ and ‘CSI: Miami’ between 2008 and 2011. He was offered the role of ‘Alexander "Tig" Trager’, a violent gangster of the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club, in the television series ‘Sons of Anarchy’. Coates played one of the main characters on the crime series, which also featured Charlie Hunnam, Katey Sagal, Mark Boone Junior, and Tommy Flanagan in other major roles. The actors were nominated at the PAAFTJ Television Awards for the Best Cast in A Drama Series.
Kim Coates also featured in television shows like ‘Crossing Lines’, ‘Godless’, and ‘Ghost Wars’ in important roles. In 2017, Coates appeared in the Canadian drama series ‘Bad Blood’ as ‘Declan Gardiner’ and was nominated at the Canadian Screen Awards for Best Lead Actor, Television Film or Miniseries. He later won the Best Actor in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role award at the Canadian Screen Awards.
