Career
The first future members of Got7 who joined JYPE were JP and Jinyoung, who successfully auditioned in 2009. In early 2010, Mark and BamBam were recruited in Los Angeles, California, US, and Bangkok, Thailand, respectively. At the time, Yugyeom was appearing in multiple dance competitions. While he was attending a dance school, he was asked if he wanted to become a JYP trainee. He accepted and subsequently became part of the project. In December, Jackson, who had come up through the overseas auditions, joined the rest of the boys. In September 2013, Yugyeom, along with Mark, Jackson, and BamBam, made their television debut on the fourth episode of Mnet's reality-survival program ‘Who is Next: WIN’ as part of a singing quartet. Soon after, Youngjae was hired as the seventh and final member of the group.
JYPE made the news of their new pop group public on January 1, 2014. Got7 was dubbed as a hip-hop group which makes use of martial arts tricking and b-boying styles in their performances. They released their debut EP, ‘Got It?’, on 20 January. The EP was a huge success, reaching the number two spot on Gaon Music Chart and the number one spot on the US World chart. They followed it up by releasing their second EP, ‘Got Love’, in June 2014. In July, they put out the box set ‘Got Love Taiwan Special Edition’. Got7 released their box set, ‘Got7 Thailand Special Set’, in September 2014. That year, on 18 November, they released their first studio album, ‘Identify’. They also signed with Sony Music Entertainment Japan that year, which effectively garnered them an entry into the country’s music industry.
Since then, the group has released six more Korean EPs: ’Just Right’ (July 2015), ‘Mad’ (November 2015), ‘Flight Log: Departure’ (March 2016), ‘Flight Log: Arrival’, (March 2017), ‘7 for 7’, (December 2017), and ‘Eyes on You’ (March 2018). They put out their first Japanese EP, ‘Hey Yah’, in November 2016. Their most recent Japanese EP is ‘Turn Up, which was released in November 2017.
Besides ‘Identify’, the group has released two more Korean studio albums, ‘Flight Log: Turbulence’ (September 2016) and ‘Present: You’ (September 2018), and one Japanese studio album, ‘Moriagatteyo’ (February 2016). All the three Korean studio albums topped the Gaon Music Chart at some point. In April 2018, they released their only video album to date, ‘GOT7 Arena Special 2017 "My Swagger"’.
Competing against the likes of IOI’s Kim Chung Ha, Block B’s U-Kwon, Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon, NCT’s TEN, and MONSTA X’s Shownu, Yugyeom appeared in the 10th episode of Mnet’s ‘Hit the Stage’ and went on to win the competition. As a member of Got7, he has been featured on ‘Fly’ Tour (2016) and ‘Eyes on You’ tour (2018) and has won numerous awards, including four Golden Disk Awards, three Gaon Chart Music Awards, and three Seoul Music Awards. Yugyeom, along with the rest of the group, has appeared in several web reality series as well as the web drama ‘Dream Knight’ (2015).
