Career
Leland Chapman started his career as a bounty hunter and bail bondsman at his father’s Da Kine Bail Bonds. He was his father’s most trusted subordinate. Other family members who worked for the company at the time were Beth, his step-mother, and Lyssa, his half-sister.
In 2003, Leland accompanied his father and associate Tim Chapman to Mexico to arrest convicted rapist Andrew Luster, who had left the US during his trial for drugging and raping multiple women and was found guilty in absentia on 86 counts. They were successful. However, on their journey back to the US, they were apprehended by the Mexican police. Their initial request for bail was rejected but when Beth raised public awareness about her family through media, the Mexican authorities decided to allow it. Following the suggestion of their lawyer, the three Chapmans left Mexico for US, thus becoming bail jumpers themselves.
Luster was returned to California where he had been sentenced to 125 years in prison. However, as bounty hunting is not legal in Mexico, the country’s authorities brought charges of “deprivation of liberty” against the three Chapmans. They were subsequently apprehended by the US federal marshals in Honolulu, Hawaii. After receiving significant media coverage, the cases against them were dropped.
The reality TV show starring the Chapman family, ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter,’ premiered on A&E Network on August 31, 2004, and aired for eight seasons before its cancellation in May 2012. The last episode aired on June 23, 2012. Both Leland and his brother Duane II departed from the show in 2012 after a disagreement with Duane Sr. and Beth. He seemingly patched things up with his father and his current wife when they began starring together in ‘Dog and Beth: On the Hunt’, a spinoff of ‘Dog the Bounty Hunter’. That show aired from April 21, 2013, to August 22, 2015, before it was cancelled.
Leland and his brothers, Duane II and Wesley Chapman, set up a company called Chapbros Media, which released an iPhone, iPod Touch and website talent contest application, named "Show Off". At present, office and tractor design ideas are sold through the website. It is not known whether Leland is still affiliated with it. He has headed his own bail bond business Kama'aina Bail Bonds on the Big Island of Hawaii as well as his father’s company in Oahu. At one point, he also ran Bounty Hunter Tactical Supply Co. Even after moving to Alabama, he is still active as a bail agent.
