Matilda Ziegler is an English actress who played a significant role in the popular comedy series ‘Mr. Bean’, portraying the love interest of the main character. Even though she is also active in the film and theater industries, she is best known for her television roles. Her other popular TV shows include ‘EastEnders’ and ‘Sex Traffic’. Ziegler was born in Ashford, Kent, England. She began her acting career in the soap opera ‘EastEnders’, where she played the role of Donna Ludlow. She was next seen in ‘Mr. Bean’, a critically acclaimed sitcom, where she played the titular character’s love interest. She has also appeared in several stage productions such as ‘Twelfth Night’ and the theatrical version of Mr. Bean. She has done voice roles in radio shows as well. Career
Matilda Ziegler began her career with a role in the British soap opera ‘EastEnders’, which was created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland. The series earned much popularity and won many awards. She portrayed Donna Ludlow, an illegitimate daughter of Kathy Beale. Her character eventually dies of a heroin overdose after much suffering.
Ziegler next starred in ‘Mr. Bean,’ a TV sitcom which ran from 1990 to 1995. The series starred Rowan Atkinson in the lead role; he was also a co-creator. She portrayed Irma Gobb, the love interest of the main character, who is often treated inconsiderately by him. Despite appearing in only four episodes as Irma, she managed to capture the audience’s attention and a few awards. The success of the show led to two spin-off films.
In 1994, she was seen in her first feature film, ‘Decadence’. Her next role in a cinema was in ‘Jilting Joe’ in 1998.
Her next important TV role was in the drama series ‘Harbour Lights’. It aired from 1999 to 2000, for two seasons. The reviews were mixed to positive. In 2000, she was seen in the family drama, ‘Where the Heart is’, where she had a minor role. In 2003 and 2004, she was seen in the sitcom ‘Swiss Toni’, where she played the wife of the titular character. In 2004, she had a small role in the TV series ‘Sex Traffic’. The show was a success and won eight BAFTA Awards, including one for the Best Drama Serial. It won four Gemini Awards as well.
She appeared in the fourth season of the crime drama ‘The Inspector Lynley Mysteries’. The series revolves around Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers, assigned to the Scotland Yard, as they solve murder cases. She then played a supporting role in the TV series ‘Lark Rise to CandleFord’. It aired from 2008 to 2011.
Ziegler reprised her role of Irma Gobb in ‘Mr. Bean: The Animated Series’, an animated version of the sitcom ‘Mr. Bean,’ in which she voiced the character. It had originally aired from 2002 to 2004, and was again revived in 2015. The show was received positively by the critics. She has appeared in several theatrical productions as well as radio shows, such as ‘Rigor Mortis’ and ‘Cabin Pressure’.
