Matthew Barrett Biography

Matthew Barrett is a doctor and specializes in cardiology. He has worked at ‘St Vincent’s Hospital’ in Dublin under the cardiology department. While working at ‘St Vincent’s Hospital,’ Dr. Barrett was held in high regard for his services as a specialist registrar. He also worked at the ‘Mater Misericordiae University Hospital’ in Dublin before undertaking a fellowship in Chicago. He then moved to the United States to gain some international experience.

Matthew Barrett started dating Leo Varadkar in 2015 and the two have been together ever since. Interestingly, Varadkar too is a doctor by profession as he had studied medicine at ‘Trinity College Dublin.’ When Varadkar was sworn in as Ireland’s Taoiseach in 2017, Matthew Barrett was among the dignitaries attending the event. A proud Barrett witnessed his boyfriend becoming the youngest and the first openly gay leader in the history of the Irish Government. Varadkar has often sung his boyfriend’s praises in public. He has also credited Barrett with making him a better person. In one of his interviews, the Taoiseach had said that Matthew Barrett is intelligent than him, a quality which he finds intimidating at times. Barrett and Varadkar have holidayed together and have met each other’s family members as well. They even share their birthday as both were born on 18 January. As of now, Matthew Barrett is in a long distance relationship with his politician partner as he is staying in Chicago as part of his work. Barrett is part of a specialist training at a hospital in Chicago, USA. Despite their busy schedule, the couple makes sure they spend enough time with each other through Apple’s ‘FaceTime’ app. They even fly across 3500 miles once in every couple of months to spend quality time with each other.

Much like his partner Leo Varadkar, Matthew Barrett too, loves going on regular runs and hikes as he likes to keep himself fit. He likes to keep a low profile as he avoids hogging the limelight as much as he can. According to his partner, Barrett is a Gaeilgeoir. Varadkar has often described him as ‘intelligent’ and ‘bright.’ He has also said that Barrett is good at calculating things in a relatively short period of time and that he can understand concepts, such as politics fairly quickly.
