Nicholas Alan Gehlfuss was born on January 21, 1985, in Cleveland, Ohio, US, to Sandra and Alan Gehlfuss. According to sources, he developed an interest in acting early in life and was motivated by his parents to follow his dreams.
Gehlfuss grew up in Little Italy and Chesterland, Ohio. During his high-school days, Gehlfuss played junior varsity soccer. He studied at the ‘Marietta College’ in Marietta, Ohio, and earned a BFA degree. He later joined the ‘University of Missouri-Kansas City’ and obtained his MFA degree.

Career
He lent his voice to the character ‘Martinson Radio’ in the family film ‘Sam Steele and the Junior Detective Agency,’ which premiered at the ‘St. Louis International Film Festival’ on November 22, 2009, and later released in the US in January 2011. Meanwhile, he started appearing on TV shows, mostly in single-episode guest appearances in series such as ‘The Good Wife’ (2011) and ‘Person of Interest’ (2012).
Gehlfuss made his stage debut in 2012, playing ‘Lysander’ in the ‘Classic Stage Company’ production of the Shakespearean comedy ‘Midsummer Night's Dream’ in New York, co-starring Bebe Neuwirth and Christina Ricci. He bagged the ‘Rosemarie Tichler’ award for his performance. He also starred in the Neil LaBute play ‘Reasons to Be Pretty,’ along with Shawn Hatosy, Amber Tamblyn, and Alicia Witt. It was staged in 2014, at the ‘Geffen Playhouse’ in Los Angeles, California.
He portrayed the character ‘Mitch’ in the comedy–drama–romance film ‘In Lieu of Flowers.’ The film premiered at the ‘Newport Beach International Film Festival’ on April 28, 2013. That year, he also played the recurring role of ‘Ross Kessler’ in four episodes of the ‘HBO’ political-drama series ‘The Newsroom.’
The critically and commercially successful biographical drama film ‘Love & Mercy,’ which premiered on September 7, 2014, at the ‘Toronto International Film Festival,’ saw Gehlfuss portraying the real-life character of ‘Bruce Johnston.’
He gained attention with the recurring role of ‘Robbie Pratt’ in six episodes of the fourth season of the ‘Showtime’ comedy–drama series ‘Shameless’ (2014). The other recurring roles played by Gehlfuss that year were those of ‘Cameron Maddox’ in the modern Western crime-drama series ‘Longmire’ and ‘Mark Strauss’ in the detective anthology drama series ‘Murder in the First.’ That year, he also appeared in the TV movie ‘Clementine.’
Gehlfuss earned his most notable role when he was cast as ‘Dr. Will Halstead’ in ‘Chicago P.D.’ (2015). The character was an emergency medicine doctor and was first introduced in the March 25, 2015-aired episode ‘Say Her Real Name.’ Between 2015 and 2018, Gehlfuss played the recurring role in 15 episodes of ‘Chicago P.D.’ and in 14 episodes of the action–drama series ‘Chicago Fire,’ the first installment of the franchise.
The third installment of ‘Chicago Med’ included the character of ‘Dr. Halstead’ as part of its main cast. Gehlfuss has gained decent fame starring in the series, along with Yaya DaCosta, Torrey DeVitto, and Rachel DiPillo. The show had its premiere on ‘NBC’ on November 17, 2015, and has already completed four seasons. The series was renewed by ‘NBC’ for a fifth season on February 26, 2019. The fifth season is planned for a September 25, 2019 premiere.
Meanwhile, he was seen playing ‘Gabe’ in the critically acclaimed 2016 American financial thriller ‘Equity.’ The forthcoming biographical drama film ‘Butterfly in the Typewriter,’ starring Marie Avgeropoulos and Cary Elwes, will see Gehlfuss in the role of ‘Joel Fletcher.’
