Rico Nasty was born Maria Kelly on May 7, 1997, in New York. She was raised in Maryland and was exposed to rap music at a very young age, as her father was a rapper. She quickly picked up the nuances of rapping from her father.
Rico grew up listening to artists like Bob Marley, Beyonce, JAY-Z, Nas, and Jill Scott. She eventually developed interest in music, but never thought about making a career out of it.
When she was 11 years old, she moved to a new neighborhood along with her mother and had to attend a boarding school in Baltimore. When she was 13, her parents separated, which had a negative impact on her life.
By the age 15, she had begun to make music. She also started writing poetry and songs to get rid of boredom. She even released her maiden mixtape titled ‘Summers Eve’ when she was still a student. However, she did not take her writing and rapping skills seriously, until she was pregnant with her child.
Having lost her boyfriend Brandon to asthma, Rico quickly realized that music could be her savior and a platform on which she could raise her child without any hassles. At the age of 18, she gave birth to her son Cameron, after which she decided to pursue music as a career.

In 2016, she released her first single titled ‘iCarly,’ which went on to become viral. She followed it up with yet another impressive single titled ‘Hey Arnold,’ which too became popular among music lovers and critics. The song was later remixed by the famous rapper Lil Yachty, which increased her popularity.
In 2017, she released her album ‘Tales of Tacobella.’ The album was released under the label ‘Sugar Trap’ and became a huge hit, handing Rico the success that she was looking for. In the same year, she released another album titled ‘Sugar Trap 2,’ which too was received positively by fans and critics alike. Some of the songs from the album are ‘Key Lime OG,’ ‘Rojo,’ and ‘Poppin.’

Personal Life
Rico was in a relationship with a guy named Brandon. Unfortunately, she lost him to asthma before realizing that she was pregnant with his child. After her boyfriend’s demise, Rico went into depression for a few months, and later got out of it with the help of her child and music.
She is currently in relationship with Malik, her manager. She loves spending time with her boyfriend. She also loves smoking up marijuana and is a self-proclaimed user of weed.
Rico is a huge fan of anime. She dreams of having a huge fan base in Japan, so that she can shift her base from the United States to the land of the rising sun.
She is a sports fanatic, and played lacrosse and soccer during her younger days. In fact, she was the captain of her school’s soccer team. However, she does not play sports anymore and dedicates most of her time in making music.
Through her music, she wants to make women feel more comfortable about hip-hop. She also wants to inspire many female rappers, and finds comparison between female and male rappers illogical.
