Ryan DeBolt first met Sara Ramirez at an “after-after” party. The two subsequently started dating and got engaged in 2011, after DeBolt planned an exceptionally romantic proposal for the actress in Paris. The two married on 4 July 2012 at a beachside venue in New York City in the presence of close friends and family members.

Ramirez openly announced her sexual orientation at a conference in 2016. They actively campaign for LGBT rights and are a member of the True Colors Fund's Board of Directors. They also support groups like NDLON, Bisexual Organizing Project, and Mujerez De Maiz that work for the betterment of the LGBT communities.

Sara Ramirez and Ryan DeBolt are not together anymore. On July 7, 2021, Sara took to Instagram to announce the split from husband, Ryan. Sara wrote in the Instagram post, “Ryan and I are no longer together. We remain loving and supportive in how we are choosing to forge our new individual paths.”

Sara Ramirez’s character of Callie in the TV series ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is also bisexual.

In 2016, Sara Ramirez donated her gorgeous hair to "Locks of Love", a non-profit organization that makes wigs for kids who suffer from medical problems that lead to hair loss.
