Sakina Jaffrey is an American actress who is popularly known as the White House Chief of Staff, ‘Linda Vasquez,’ in the Netflix original series ‘House of Cards’. She comes from a highly reputed family—her father, Saeed Jaffrey, was an iconic Indian-British actor, and her mother, Madhur Jaffrey, is an actress as well as a food and travel writer. Beginning her acting career in the late 1980s, Sakina Jaffrey has appeared in numerous films till date, the popular ones being ‘The Perfect Murder’, ‘Masala’, ‘Cotton Mary’, ‘The Mystic Masseur’, ‘The Guru’, and ‘The Truth About Charlie.’ She has often shared screen space with her parents and children. After exclusively focusing on a film career for several years, she ventured into television as well. Sakina Jaffrey began her acting career in 1988 when she appeared alongside her mother, Madhur Jaffrey, in the English language Indian film ’The Perfect Murder’. The film featured Stellan Skarsgård, Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak, and Amjad Khan besides the mother-daughter duo. The film was produced by Merchant-Ivory, with whom Jaffrey went on to work on several other films in the future.
After working with her mother, it was time for her to work with her father, the iconic actor Saeed Jaffrey. The father-daughter duo appeared in the Canadian drama film ‘Masala’ (1991), which won the Samuelson Award at the Birmingham International Film and Television Festival. Saeed Jaffrey portrayed three roles in the film and was nominated at the Genie Awards for Best Actor. Sakina Jaffrey and her mother worked together again in the film ‘Cotton Mary,’ where she portrayed the character of ‘Rosie.’ Her mother, who was the co-director of the film, also played the title character.
Over the years, Sakina Jaffrey appeared in many popular films, including ‘The Mystic Masseur’, ‘The Guru’, and ‘Revolution No. 9’. She appeared alongside Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton in the 2002 American-French film ‘The Truth About Charlie’. Jaffrey has appeared in many television shows since making her debut in ‘Law & Order’ (episode: ‘Endurance’) as ‘Dr. Balikrishan’ in 2000. Jaffrey portrayed the character of ‘Dr. Hickman’ in the series ‘Third Watch’ between 2003 and 2005.
In 2013, she began appearing in the American political thriller web television series ‘House of Cards’ as ‘Linda Vasquez’, the Chief of Staff at the White House. She also appeared in ‘Sleepy Hollow’, ‘Madam Secretary’, ‘Mr. Robot’, ‘Halal in the Family’, ‘The Mindy Project’, and ‘Blindspot’ over the next few years. Sakina Jaffrey played one of the lead roles, the Homeland Security agent ‘Denise Christopher’, in the NBC science fiction time-travel drama series ‘Timeless’. She was featured in the 2018 season of the American spy thriller series ‘Homeland’ as ‘Dr. Meyyer’. In 2018, she appeared in the action thriller film ‘The Equalizer 2’ as ‘Fatima’.
