Satnam Singh Bhamara is a well-known Indian basketball player currently playing for the Dallas Mavericks. He got into the NBA after being drafted during the 2015 NBA draft, making him the first Indian player to be drafted into the NBA. He is known for his unusual height of 7 feet 2 inches. Born in a village in Punjab, India, Singh was raised in a family of farmers and millers. By the age of nine, Singh was already taller than most of the adults in his village. Taking advantage of this, his father took him to a local basketball court with the intent of encouraging him to pursue a career in the sport. Over the next few years, he took part in youth leagues in Punjab, where he easily dominated his opponents. He continued to further develop his skills at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy. After Singh led the Punjab youth team to a national championship, he was chosen by the Basketball Federation of India to play at an NBA ‘Basketball without Borders’ Camp. His skills received massive appreciation and he was soon selected for a scholarship under the IMGR basketball training academy, following which he moved to Florida, USA. Eventually he made his way into the NBA and has also represented the Indian national Basketball Team on multiple occasions.

Professional Career
Satnam Singh started playing basketball at an early age. He was enrolled at the Ludhiana Basketball Academy by his father who noticed his son’s unusually tall height. He was taught by Dr. Sankaran Subramanian, former Punjab basketball coach and director of the Sports Authority of India. He towered at 6 feet 11 inches when he was only 13. He soon started gaining national attention as well.
Singh came to attention in June 2010, after leading the Punjab youth team to a national championship. This led the Basketball Federation of Indian to choose him to play at the NBA ‘Basketball without Borders’ camp which was held in Singapore. He played against some members of the Indian national team as well, and performed brilliantly.
Soon, he was awarded a scholarship under the IMGR basketball training, and taken to Bradenton, Florida. Though he had no knowledge of English, he was one of the 29 student athletes to train at the IMG academy. His performance was good during the 2014-15 season, where he averaged 9.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in less than 20 minutes per game. Unfortunately, because of his poor English, he was unable to get a scholarship to play in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).
Singh was drafted into the NBA during the 2015 NBA draft, after being selected by the Dallas Mavericks in June 2015. This made him the first Indian-born player to be drafted into the NBA. He played with the team during the 2015 NBA Summer League. After being acquired by the Texas Legends, he made his professional debut in November in a match against Austin Spurs, which resulted in a 104-82 loss for the Legends. His best performance of the season was seen on 5th February 2016, where he got six points and six rebounds in 22 minutes as a starter. However, the match ended in a loss for his team.

National Career
At the age of thirteen, Satnam Singh played for the Indian youth national basketball team at the 2009 FIBA Asia Under-16 Championship. The Indian team finished at the 10th place in the tournament.
Singh also played for the national team at the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship, the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship, and at the 2017 FIBA Asia Championship.

Satnam Singh Bhamara was born on 10 December 1995 in Baloke, a village in the Barnala district of Punjab, India. His father and grandfathers were wheat farmers and millers. He is the second of three siblings.
