Roberts ended up in the entertainment industry after he was discovered by his father’s friend, award-winning screenwriter Robert Forsythe, while he was playing the wolf in a school production of ‘Little Red Riding Hood.’ This led him to get associated with a Toronto acting agency.
Forsythe’s efforts also saw Roberts getting the recurring role of ‘Teddy Kent’ in the ‘CBC’-aired Canadian series ‘Emily of New Moon.’ He featured in 23 episodes of the series, between 1998 and 2000. Meanwhile, Roberts played ‘Brian O'Connor’ in two episodes of the Canadian–American horror anthology TV series ‘Goosebumps’ (1997).
Roberts made his film debut with the family-fantasy film ‘Jacob Two Two Meets the Hooded Fang,’ which premiered at the ‘Cinefest Sudbury International Film Festival’ on September 24, 1999. He then focused on TV works, portraying the role of ‘David,’ boyfriend of ‘Rogue’ (played by Anna Paquin), in the blockbuster hit and critically successful 2000-released American superhero film ‘X-Men.’
Between 2002 and 2004, he featured as ‘Dean Walton’ in five episodes of the popular Canadian teen-drama series ‘Degrassi: The Next Generation.’ In the ensuing years, he appeared in several other series, such as ‘Falcon Beach’ (2006) and ‘Wild Roses’ (2009). He also starred in the TV movies ‘Her Husband's Betrayal’ (2013) and ‘Recipe for Love’ (2014).
His next notable film feature was as ‘Mike’ in the 2005 post-apocalyptic horror flick ‘Land of the Dead.’ Marking the fourth film of George A. Romero's six ‘Living Dead’ movies, the film became a sensational hit and earned mostly positive reviews. Roberts later reprised the role in the fifth film of the ‘Living Dead’ movie series. Titled ‘Diary of the Dead,’ the 2007 film also became a commercial success.
The ‘20th Century Fox’-produced and 2005-released commercially successful American family comedy ‘Cheaper by the Dozen 2’ featured him as ‘Calvin Murtaugh.’ This was followed by appearances in several other films, such as ‘Man of the Year’ (2006), which was an American political satire starring Robin Williams, and ‘Jumper’ (2008), an American science-fiction action flick.
His next notable film role was that of ‘Albert Wesker,’ one of the central characters of the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise, in the Paul W. S. Anderson-directed and the 2010-released fourth installment of the ‘Resident Evil’ film series, titled ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife.’ Roberts gained considerable fame starring in the villainous role, along with Milla Jovovich, Kim Coates, Ali Larter, Wentworth Miller, Boris Kodjoe, and Spencer Locke. The action–horror film grossed a whopping $300.2 million worldwide, against a budget of $60 million.
He reprised the role of ‘Albert Wesker’ in the fifth and sixth instalments of the ‘Resident Evil’ film series, titled ‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ (2012) and ‘Resident Evil: The Final Chapter’ (2016). Both the films were huge commercial hits, with the latter emerging as the highest-grosser of the film series, earning more than $312 million worldwide.
