Steven Macon Greer was born on June 28, 1955, in Charlotte, North Carolina, US. He apparently saw a flying saucer, or an unidentified flying object (UFO), when he was 8 years of age and another when he was 35.
Greer initially received Transcendental Meditation teacher’s training and then worked as a director of a meditation center. In 1982, he obtained a BS degree in biology from the Appalachian State University.
In 1987, he received his MD from the James H. Quillen College of Medicine of the East Tennessee State University. The same year, Greer became part of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
In 1989, Greer obtained his Virginia medical license. He later worked as a trauma surgeon. He had also been the Chairman of Emergency Medicine at the Lenoir, North Carolina-based Caldwell Memorial Hospital.
In 1988, Steven M. Greer retired as an emergency physician and focused on his research on ufology. In 1990, he established the Center for the Study of Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) to stimulate research on extra-terrestrial civilizations and ways to connect with them. The group named any communication with alien life initiated by humans as CE-5, or close encounters of the fifth kind.
The organization later claimed to have recorded more than 3,000 UFO sightings by pilots. They also recorded more than 4,000 landing traces and prepared teams to respond to such traces quickly.
In 1993, he launched the Disclosure Project, which was aimed at disclosing the government's knowledge of UFOs and extra-terrestrial life. The project was also geared toward granting amnesty to whistle-blowers from government projects, who were willing to share sensitive information about UFOs.
In October 1994, Steven M. Greer made an appearance in Larry King's The UFO Coverup? In May 2001, he held a press conference at Washington, DC’s National Press Club, featuring several retired government, military, intelligence, and corporate witnesses, who related their testimonies regarding the existence of extra-terrestrial life and the classified government projects that tried to keep knowledge about alien life away from the public. The event was viewed by an audience of more than a billion people all over the world, through both real-time streaming and global media coverage.
He has also worked to bring together scientists and leaders from across the globe to develop new and clean technology energy systems. He is known for his efforts toward changing our civilization from a fossil-fuel-reliant one to one that is dependent on clean energy.
Greer has also appeared on programs on major channels, such as the BBC, CBS, The Discovery Channel, Thrive, and The History Channel (the Ancient Aliens series). For over three decades, he has held briefings for senior government officials globally, conducted countless media interviews, and delivered numerous lectures on UFOs and extra-terrestrial life.
Throughout his career as a ufologist, Steven M. Greer has penned several books and created a number of documentaries. In 2001, he released the book Disclosure: Military and Government Witnesses Reveal the Greatest Secrets in Modern History.
The book was more of a testimony by several government insiders on how the government had covered up knowledge about extra-terrestrial life. It also spoke of super-secret programs that had the potential to end all pollution issues and enable humanity to start a new civilization.
In his 2006 book Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge, he stated his personal stories of UFO sightings and his disclosures based on his conversations with over 450 government insiders, such as former CIA Director R. James Woolsey.
In Greer’s 2009 book Contact: Countdown to Transformation, Greer and his CSETI team narrated their first-hand accounts of the contacts they had had with extra-terrestrial life since 1992. It also spoke about ideas such as remote viewing. His 2013 book Extraterrestrial Contact gave an overview of the best UFO sightings and evidences supporting their existence.
In 2013, Steven M. Greer co-produced the documentary Sirius, which showcased his research and hypotheses on extra-terrestrial life and government cover-ups of UFO knowledge. It premiered in Los Angeles, California, on April 22, 2013.
Narrated by Thomas Jane and directed by Amardeep Kaleka, the documentary covered Greer's book Hidden Truth, Forbidden Knowledge. It showcased a six-inch human skeleton, now known as the Atacama skeleton, which was thought to be an alien skeleton. Genetic evidence later proved it was the skeleton of tribal lady with birth defects from South America.
In 2017, Steven M. Greer was featured in the crowd-funded documentary Unacknowledged, which also led to the release of a companion book of the same title. It became the number one documentary globally on platforms such as iTunes.

However, most critics panned the film as fantasy propaganda.
He married Emily Greer in Israel in August 1979. The couple had four children.
