However, many magazines and other publications have reported that linguists revealed that Cruise misinterpreted the meaning of the word in Hebrew, stating that it actually means 'from Syria' in Hebrew and Arabic. They also noted that 'Suri' is a pet form of 'Sarah' in Yiddish, meaning 'princess', which might be the reason behind the mistake. Interestingly, after her name was made public, netizens found out that 'suri' also means 'pickpocket' in Japanese, 'horse mackerels' in Italian, and 'to sour' in a French verb form. This discovery led to jokes on the internet, which might be one of the reasons why the name, unlike many other celebrity names, did not see wide adoption.

It was widely reported that Suri Cruise's mother filed for divorce from Tom Cruise because she feared that Cruise would abduct Suri, and also felt intimidated by the Church of Scientology.
