Career
According to some reports, McGill is a music producer who owns a small music label. He is also the owner of a bar in London. A few reports state that he is one of the co-founders of the theatrical entertainment act Combo Fiasco. This is incorrect. While someone named Tony McGill is indeed one of the three people who set up Combo Fiasco, along with Shaun Murphy and Sharon Millerchip, in 1993 in Melbourne, Australia, he and Balfe’s boyfriend are not the same person. In 1993, the Irishman was only 16 or 17 years old.
Relationship with Caitriona Balfe
Like Tony McGill, his fiancée Balfe is also from Ireland. A native of Dublin, she was raised in the village of Tydavnet, near Monaghan. Prior to his retirement, her father worked as a Garda Sergeant. She began modelling in her late teens, after being spotted by an agent at a local shopping centre. She subsequently modelled in Dublin for a few months before she was scouted by a Ford Models agent, who gave her the opportunity to model for them in Paris. Over the course of her career, she has worked for brands like Chanel, Moschino, Givenchy, Dolce & Gabbana, Alberta Ferretti, and Louis Vuitton. She has appeared on the ramp for several notable fashion brands, including 14 shows for Dolce & Gabbana; eight for Chanel; seven for Narciso Rodriguez, Marc Jacobs, and Moschino; six for Etro; five for Roberto Cavalli, Armani, Ann Demeulemeester, Max Mara, and Louis Vuitton; four for Givenchy, Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta, Missoni, Burberry, Alexander McQueen, Alberta Ferretti, and Emanuel Ungaro; and three for Rochas, Laura Biagiotti, BCBG Max Azria, Alessandro Dell'Acqua, Sonia Rykiel, and Kenzo.
She was part of advertising campaigns for brands like Calvin Klein, Levi’s, Max Mara, Oscar de la Renta, Bally, Escada, Hush Puppies, Bottega Veneta, Victoria’s Secret, and H&M. In 2002, she made an appearance on Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. She has also been featured on the covers of ‘Vogue,’ ‘Harper’s Bazaar,’ and ‘ELLE’ magazines.
At the height of her career, Balfe was one of the most sought-after models in the world. However, in 2013, she admitted that modelling was not a passion for her and that made it get old very quickly. She was extremely frustrated. In 2006, she had a small role in the comedy-drama film ‘The Devil Wears Prada’. In 2009, after spending a decade in fashion, she decided to return to entertainment. In 2011, she appeared in the short film ‘’Lust Life’. She played Alex #34 in the 2012 miniseries ‘The Beauty Inside’. That year, she made her big screen debut in the comedy-drama ‘Los Angeles’, portraying a character named Veronique. In 2013, she shared screen space with Jesse Eisenberg and Mark Ruffalo in ‘Now You See Me’ and Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in ‘Escape Plan’. Between 2012 and 2013, she had the recurring role of Breanna Sheehan in the web series ‘H+’.
In September 2013, Balfe landed the role of Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser in Starz fantasy romance-drama ‘Outlander’. She was reportedly the last member of the main cast to join the show. Her character is an English combat nurse during World War II who visits Scotland in order to spend time with her husband (Tobias Menzies) but gets transported back in time to 1743 Scotland. For her performance, Balfe has received two People's Choice Awards, two Saturn Awards, and an Irish Film and Television Award.
As both McGill and Balfe have gone to great lengths to keep their private and public life completely separate, not much is known about their relationship. She told ‘People’ magazine in January 2018, after her Golden Globe appearance wearing the engagement ring, that they had been dating for two years. She also revealed in the interview that the engagement happened over the holidays. There is a video on Instagram uploaded in 2015 that shows Balfe playing the flute while sitting on McGill’s lap. He has accompanied her to various events, including the 2016 ceremony for Jodie Foster’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the 2017 Oscar Wilde Awards.
