Trent Olsen comes from a family with deep roots in the entertainment industry. His younger twin sisters, Mary-Kate and Ashley, were cast in the role of Michelle Tanner on the ABC sitcom, ‘Full House’, when they were just 6 months old. They became very popular within a few years, and in 1993, at the age of seven, they released their first video under their family production company Dualstar, titled Our First Video. Trent made his first appearance on this video in a scene where his sisters sing "Brother for Sale" to irritate him. He went on to feature as himself in a number of their family productions, and also appeared in a couple movies and TV series.

While Trent Olsen's short acting career has been overshadowed by his younger sisters' success, very few know that he had auditioned for a role in ‘Tales from the Crypt’ (1989) and was selected for it. However, his parents did not allow him to act in the movie as they thought he was too young to be in a horror film. While he did not appear on television or in films much, he remained involved in the entertainment business. He enrolled into University of Southern California in October 2004 to study music and completed his graduation in Jazz Studies from there in May 2006. He also attended New York Film Academy in Los Angeles, California. Trent has been a fan of comic books since his childhood, and used to collect as well as write comic books. He went on to work as a writer at the film and television divisions of Storm King Productions, headed by Sandy King Carpenter, which is known for its horror and sci-fi themed comic books. Apart from writing comic books, Trent has also taken part in many events and comic conventions for the production house. He and his younger sibling, Elizabeth, inspired the Elizabeth and James fashion collection by his younger twin sisters Mary-Kate and Ashley.

James Trent Olsen was born on May 6, 1984, in Sherman Oaks, California. His father, David Olsen, is a real estate developer and mortgage banker and his mother, Jarnette Jones, is a personal manager. He is of Norwegian descent from his father's side and of English descent from his mother's side. His parents separated in 1996. He is the eldest child and has three younger sisters, twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, and Elizabeth. He also has two half siblings from his father's second marriage, a half-sister, Courtney Taylor, and a half-brother, Jake. He is brother-in-law to French born US banker, Olivier Sarkozy, who is the half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy. While he doesn't seem to be in a relationship currently, he has been linked to a girl named, Kacey Style, previously. It has also been reported that he dated model Katherine Shane briefly.

He attended a school in North Hollywood from which he graduated in June 2002. He used to host movie review shows during his USC days and also won the Mr. Tommy pageant there. He is very sociable and is known as a prankster among his acquaintances, who revealed that he used to tweak his Facebook profile every few months to change his birthday. He would also sell to his friends autographed pictures of his famous sisters. He likes to draw, play the piano, go fishing, and is also interested in sports like basketball, baseball, and football. He loves dogs, and posts pictures of his pet dogs often on his Instagram account.
