Out of more than 10,000 children from Texas and Oklahoma who took part in the year-long casting search, Tye Sheridan was selected to play the role of Steve O’Brien in Terrence Malick's fantasy drama ‘The Tree of Life’. Also starring Brad Pitt, Jessica Chastain, and Sean Penn, the film had its premiere at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, where it received the prestigious Palme d'Or. It was nominated for three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Cinematography.
In 2012, he worked with Jacob Lofland, Reese Witherspoon, and Matthew McConaughey in Jeff Nichols’ coming-of-age drama ‘Mud’. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Sheridan received widespread recognition for his portrayal of Ellis, one of the two boys who discover a strange man named Mud (McConaughey) living in a boat and agree to help him in exchange for the ownership of the boat.
In David Gordon Green’s 2013 indie crime drama ‘Joe’, Sheridan starred opposite Nicolas Cage and played a 15-year-old drifter named Gary. The film premiered at the 70th Venice International Film Festival, and while it performed poorly at the box office, it garnered critical praise for Cage and Sheridan’s performances, as well as for Green’s direction.
He played a supporting role in the 2014 crime thriller ‘The Forger’. That year, he also appeared in two episodes of season three and one episode of season four of the ABC (later Fox) sitcom ‘Last Man Standing’, portraying Eve Baxter’s (Kaitlyn Dever) one-time boyfriend, Justin. In 2015, he starred in five films: drama ‘Entertainment’, mystery drama ‘Dark Places’, comedy horror ‘Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse’, biographical drama ‘The Stanford Prison Experiment’, and theological drama ‘Last Days in the Desert’. Sheridan was cast as the lead protagonist Harper James in the 2016 action thriller ‘Detour’.
Prior to Sheridan, American actor James Marsden portrayed Cyclops/Scott Summers in ‘X-Men’ (2000), ‘X2’ (2003), ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ (2006), and ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (2014). Australian actor Tim Pocock also played the character in one film, ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ (2013). Sheridan became part of the franchise in late 2014 or early 2015, with the announcement of his casting made by director Bryan Singer in January 2015. His first outing as Cyclops/Scott Summers came about in ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ (2016). Since then, he has portrayed the character in ‘Deadpool 2’ (2018) and is set to reprise the role in the upcoming film ‘Dark Phoenix’.
In 2017, he appeared in the war-drama ‘The Yellow Bird’. In the science fiction adventure film ‘Ready Player One’, directed by Steven Spielberg, he played Wade Watts/Parzival. Adapted from Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name, the film is set in 2045 when the use of the virtual reality software OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation) has become quite prevalent, as it provides a respite from the desolated real world. Sheridan essayed the role of a young OASIS gamer who wishes to leave the slums.
In the following year, he was cast in the indie crime-drama ‘Friday’s Child’. Sheridan shared screen space with Jeff Goldblum, Denis Lavant, and Hannah Gross in Rick Alverson’s drama film ‘The Mountain’.
