Wilbur Soot Bio

As a child, Wilbur Soot acted out different roleplay scenarios with his friends on his first channel, named Settings66, which he created in May 2008. He made videos with another boy named Ben and also occasionally uploaded gaming walkthroughs. In 2011, he made a solo channel called WilburGold, as well as the channel Minecraft and Donuts, which he shared with a girl named Sophie. He was more active on the latter, but stopped uploading on it after his partner became unavailable. He created another channel, ALittleBritOfWill, in February 2013 and posted short films, music and vlogs on it for a short period of time. He, however, first gained fame as the frontman and editor of the YouTube group channel SootHouse, which he shared with seven recurring members. The channel, created in April 2017, became well-known for pioneering the "Reddit reading" style of YouTube content. He finally created his eponymous solo channel on March 29, 2019 and began uploading mostly gaming content, particularly focused on Minecraft. The next year, he joined the roleplay-focused Minecraft server, “Dream SMP”, where he founded the fictional nation of L'Manberg and became a lead writer for the server’s featured stories.

Wilbur Soot created a separate channel called Wilbur Music in November 2017 and began releasing music on the channel with his first single, The 'Nice Guy' Ballad, in January 2018. The song became quite popular and was followed by more songs that satirized the internet culture, including “Karen, please come back I miss the kids”. He released his first EP, Maybe I Was Boring, on Bandcamp on December 25, 2019, followed by the album, Your City Gave Me Asthma, on Spotify on June 25, 2020. Throughout 2020, he released three comedy songs, popularly known as the e-girl trilogy, about an e-boy simping over an e-girl: I'm In Love With An E-Girl, Internet Ruined Me and Your New Boyfriend. The last entry in the series peaked at No.65 on the “UK Singles Chart” and also appeared on the UK Indie Chart and the Irish Singles Chart. In February 2021, he co-founded the band, Lovejoy, and joined as its lead singer, songwriter, and rhythm guitarist, along with lead guitarist and songwriter Joe Goldsmith, bassist Ash Kabosu, and drummer Mark Boardman. The band’s debut EP, Are You Alright?, was released in May 2021, following which they were featured on Billboard's “Emerging Artists” chart at No.10. The band went on to release a second EP, Pebble Brain, in October that year, songs from which appeared on the “UK Top 75” and “Billboard 200”. Wilbur taught himself to play the guitar months before his 21st birthday and can also play the bass, mandolin, baritone ukulele, piano and lute.

Wilbur Soot was born as Will Gold on September 14, 1996 in Suffolk, England, United Kingdom. His parents divorced when he was in middle school, following which he lived with his father and had to sleep on a futon on the floor. While he is the only child of his parents, he has step-siblings from their other relationships. He was raised in Brighton, East Sussex and attended Sussex Downs College in Lewes, England, from where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Editing and Post Production. Wilbur, who has been passionate about roleplay since an early age, was part of a Dungeons and Dragons society in college and had quickly become a Dungeon Master. For the past few years, he has been following a personal ritual of graphing out every day of his life by rating each day out of ten. He has asthma, hypochondria, and aphantasia, the last of which makes him unable to create images in the mind's eye.
