This all changed when he went to audition for a part in the classic ‘A Christmas Story’ (1983). Although initially cast as the sidekick Grover Dill, he was later given the main villain’s role of Scut Farkus. The role unveiled Zack’s talents to the industry. In 1985, Zack Ward received his second major role as Moody Spurgeon in the TV series ‘Anne of Green Gables’ (1985). He also reprised the character the same year in the movie adaptation and then in the TV mini-series ‘Anne of Avonlea’ (1987). After that he starred in the TV movie ‘Taking Care of Terrific’ (1987). He also appeared in a number of popular TV shows like, ‘Friday the 13th: The Series’ (1988) and ‘Forever Knight’ (1992), etc. However, he struggled to be cast in mainstream movies. He co-starred in movies like ‘The Club’ (1994), ‘Wild America’ (1997), and ‘How to Make the Cruelest Month’ (1998), etc. Unfortunately, they tanked at the box office.
In spite of the disappointment, Zack Ward continued on his upward trajectory on TV. It started with his stellar outing as Jerry in the episode ‘Dirty Laundry’ of the series ‘NYPD Blue’ (1995). He would return to the series again in 1998, to portray Dan Ever in the episode ‘Top Gum’. He went on to deliver eye-catching performances in episodes of ‘Walker, Texas Ranger’ (1997), ‘JAG’ (1998), and the mini-series ‘Atomic Train’ (1999). In 2000, he reprised his fan-favorite role of Moody Spurgeon in ‘Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story’. However, the mini-series was lambasted by critics and audiences alike.

Donnelly in the blockbuster ‘Transformers’ (2007). The movie made more than US $709 million at the box office.
Zack Ward has also appeared in several top-rated shows like, ‘Deadwood’ (2004 – 2005) and ‘All of Us’ (2005). He has earned critical acclaim for his performance in the movie ‘L.A. Twister’ (2004). His other notable TV roles were in ‘Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles’ (2008), ‘Dollhouse’ (2009 – 2010), and ‘CSI: Miami’ & ‘CSI: NY’ in 2012.
