Malcolm Washington is an American film director, producer and writer, more popularly known as the award-winning actor Denzel Washington’s son. Born to a family of actors and theatre personalities, Malcolm was interested in films and filmmaking from a very young age. He took his interest forward and enrolled for an undergraduate degree in film studies from the University of Pennsylvania. At the same time, Malcolm also enjoyed a successful career as a basketball player and even played for his college. After graduating, he decided to focus on films solely and gave up playing competitive basketball. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a production assistant for the hit movie ‘Chef’ in 2014. He was promoted to a second assistant director for ‘Trouble Man’ and finally turned an assistant director with the short ‘The Last Bookstore’. He was also Spike Lee’s assistant for the popular series ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ in 2017. His breakthrough came with his short film ‘Benny Got Shot’, which he both wrote and directed. The movie was well-received, and Washington was awarded the Filmmaker-to-Watch Award by the Atlanta Film Festival. He recently produced the short ‘The Dispute’ and has several projects in the pipeline.
